Best Practices for Communicating Grades:
It is our goal to effectively and consistently communicate with parent/guardian(s) and students about academic progress via Synergy. In order to do so, our staff developed guidelines for best practices for how grades are entered and communicated. By doing so, parents/guardians and students will be able to better understand and interpret student grades while viewing Synergy.
- 80 percent based on summative assessments and assignments (for example, tests, exams, major projects and long-term assignments).
- 20 percent based on formative work (for example, homework that monitors ongoing learning).
- This creates a consistent grading template in all secondary grades and courses.
- This maintains the emphasis on the importance of summative tests and work, while also emphasizing the value of quality practice and homework in the learning process.
Teachers will create formative/summative assignments/assessments in Synergy with a projected due date:
- On the date they are assigned
- Scores will be left blank until graded
Teachers will use the comment “Excused” (EX):
- On an assignment/assessment that does not need to be made up (no impact on grade)
- Examples - one time opportunities, speakers, movie clips
Teachers will use the comment “Missing” (M):
- After the due date and collecting assignment/assessment, teachers will enter “M” within 24 hours if the assignment/assessment still hasn’t been turned in.
- If an assignment/assessment is turned in after the due date, the “M” will be removed and a “L” (late) will be added to indicate that the assignment/assessment was turned in, but late (unless absent on due date).
- If a teacher has a defined cut off date where assignment/assessment is no longer accepted for credit, the “M” will be removed, and a “0” (zero) and a “L” will be added.
Teachers will use the comment “Incomplete” (INC):
- When an assignment/assessment is not done to satisfaction of the instructor to demonstrate mastery
- If the student can continue to revise this work
- Teachers are encouraged to add public notes about revisions needed
- Once revised, teachers will remove “INC”
Teachers will use the comment “Retaught” (R):
- If a teacher chooses to record a new score or replace a previous score from an assignment/assessment after reteaching or reassessing
Teachers will use the comment “Late” (L):
- When adding an assignment/assessment to the gradebook to show that something was turned in late
Teachers will use the comment “0” (zero) :
- For assignment/assessment which cannot be made up (past cutoff date).
- If a Student attempted and scored a 0, it should have an accompanying public note stating that it can still be redone
Teachers will use the comment “Absent” (AB):
- Teachers should use EX or M to indicate if the assignment/assessment is excused or missing during the absence.
- If absent, the student will be able to make up the assignment/assessment. If turned in by the due date given, full credit will be given and the “M” will be removed.
