Dear Mr László,

I regret I could not visit you in your studio on Sunday at noon. I was sorry to hear that you were bed-ridden with a bad cold. I hope you will be on the mend by the time you receive these lines. I am travelling to Pest tomorrow and will be staying there for a few days to see my race horses. I would like to see you on my return.

I hope we shall often have a chance to see each other before our journey to America, and please express my reverence to Madame de László, yet unbeknownst to me. I would like to let you know, but I trust I shall have an opportunity to tell you in person how proud we are of our Hungarian Lenbach”.^[1] My wife is wishing you a quick recovery and forwarding her best wishes your Hungarian-speaking devoté,

Editorial Note:

Jenő Boross (1868-1942), American art collector of Hungarian origin, and retired colonel. Boross moved to the United States in 1904. For his philanthropic activities, he was elected a life member of the Metropolitan Museum. He was a close friend of Gábor Térey (1864-1927) [11881] and introduced him to Sir Joseph Duveen (1869-1939). Boross donated Old Master paintings to the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (six in total, among which are paintings by Jacopo Bassano and Johann Zoffany), the Déry Museum in Debrecen, and to various Church collections.
