Grade 3 At Home Math Practise
- Counting - counting forwards and backwards starting at zero, but also starting at random numbers, skip counting by 2, 5, 10, 25, 100
- Practising multiplication facts - The Ontario Curriculum expectation for Grade 3 is up to 7x7
- Practise telling time using an analogue clock or watch (Curriculum expectation for Grade 3 is to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes)
- Have your child help you when cooking - measuring (fractions, capacity, volume), using a timer, counting time backwards on the microwave, (watching) temperatures set on the oven
- Have your child practise counting coins and bills at home, pay for small purchases and be aware of how much change they receive (Ontario Curriculum Grade 3 expectation is up to $10)
- Talk about the weather and the related temperature in degrees Celsius
- Point out (and discuss!) when you are using math in real life situations (ex. estimating, rounding, adding, multiplying costs at the grocery store, measuring at home for home improvement projects, using a calendar, reading a recipe, speed limit signs, distances in km travelled when driving different places, measuring their height...the opportunities are endless!)
Grade 3 Reading Questions
Questioning, predicting and discussion before, during and after reading are important to developing strong reading comprehension. Any discussion during these times is beneficial. Below are a few sample questions to start the discussion with your child.
- What clues does the book give you about what it could be about (title, pictures, cover)?
- Is the story fiction or non-fiction? How do you know?
- If it is non-fiction - What do you think you will learn from this book?
- Why are you reading this book? (information, entertainment, curiosity…)
- What might happen next? Why do you think that?
- How do you think the character feels?
- What do you picture the setting to look like?
- How do the pictures, illustrations, text boxes etc. help you understand what you are reading?
- Do you agree with or understand the story or text? Does it make sense?
- How do you think the story will end?
- Does what you’re reading remind you of something you have read before?
- How did you feel about the ending?
- What was the main idea of the story or text?
- How did the story or text make you feel? What did you learn?
- What do you want to read next?
