A Moment of BAN

“All people are smart, but if you judge a fish based on his ability to climb a tree, he will spend the rest of his life thinking that he is a complete failure.”

(Albert Einstein)

Happy Hanukka! This Year Hanukka will take 8 days!

In the Beginning

“Then Judas, and his brethren said: Behold our enemies are discomfited: let us go up now to cleanse the holy places and to repair them. And all the army assembled together, and they went up into mount Sion. And they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burnt, and shrubs growing up in the courts as in a forest, or on the mountains, and the chambers joining to the temple thrown down.

And they rent their garments, and made great lamentation, and put ashes on their heads: And they fell face down to the ground on their faces, and they sounded with the trumpets of alarm, and they cried towards heaven. Then Judas appointed men to fight against them that were in the castle, till they had cleansed the holy places...”

“And they built up the holy places, and the things that were within the temple: and they sanctified the temple, and the courts. And they made new holy vessels, and brought in the candlestick, and the altar of incense, and the table into the temple. And they put incense upon the altar, and lighted up the lamps that were upon the candlestick, and they gave light in the temple.”

(The First Book of the Maccabees, 4: 36-41, 48-50)

Daf Bite  –   טעם דף

The Mishna (37b-38a) focuses on birkat kohanim - the three part blessing that the kohanim give to the rest of the people - distinguishing between the way it was done in the Temple and the way it is done outside the Temple as part of the prayer service. Among the differences enumerated in the Mishna are the way God's name is pronounced (according to the actual writing or the way it is commonly said) and the way the kohanim hold their hands during the blessing (in front of them or above their heads).

The Gemara presents an odd situation and asks how birkat kohanim should be done when the entire group is made up of kohanim. Rav Adda quotes Rav Samlai as teaching that they stand up and make the blessing in the normal way. In response to the question of who they are then blessing, Rabbi Zeira says that the blessing will affect those Jews who are working in the fields.

Rav Question – שאלת רב

Can a woman recite the Sh’ma’ Yisrael prayer using a feminine person, like “v’ahavt” instead of “v’ahavta?”

Biblical News - A Twit from King Hizkiah

For the first time, the royal seal of King Hezekiah in the Bible has been found in an archaeological excavation. The stamped clay seal, also known as a bulla, or a stamped impression, was discovered in the Ophel excavations led by Dr. Eilat Mazar at the foot of the southern wall of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The bulla, which measures just over a centimeter in diameter, bears a seal impression depicting a two-winged sun disk flanked by ankh symbols and containing a Hebrew inscription that reads “Belonging to Hezekiah, (son of) Ahaz, king of Judah.”

The bulla was discovered along with 33 other stamped bullae during wet-sifting of dirt from a refuse dump located next to a 10th-century B.C.E. royal building in the Ophel.

In the ancient Near East, clay bullae were used to secure the strings tied around rolled-up documents. The bullae were made by pressing a seal onto a wet lump of clay. The stamped bulla served as both a signature and as a means of ensuring the authenticity of the documents.

Hezekiah, son and successor of Ahaz and the 13th king of Judah (reigning c. 715–686 B.C.E.), was known for his religious reforms and attempts to gain independence from the Assyrians.

Time to Smile

A person felt too much pressure at home and went to see the doctor.

Patient: “Listen doc. the tension at home simply kills me. I can’t take it  any more.”

Doctor: “No worries. I will give you an advice to reduce the level of pressure. Every day you should run 10 miles. After a week please call me to tell me how you feel.”

After a week the patient calls.

Doctor: “How do you feel?”

Patient: “I am feeling great.”

Doctor: “And how things are going at home?”

Patient: “Home?! What home? I am 70 miles away...”

A Story - of Children

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you yet they belong not to you...

You are the bows from which your children

as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,

and He bends you with His might

that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies,

so He loves also the bow that is stable.

- Khalil Gibran

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Makon baParasha - Dotan

“…for I overheard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.”

“.כִּי שָׁמַעְתִּי אֹמְרִים נֵלְכָה דֹּתָיְנָה…”

Parasha – Bereshit: (Genesis) Vayeshev 37:1-40:23

Historical Context: Location: Kena’an and Mitsrayim. Creation Time: the second half of the 22nd century to the beginning of the 23rd century. General Calendar: approx. 1665-1715 bce.

Parashort: In the year 2216, Yakov settles in kena’an. Yoseph was 17 years old and Yakov gives him the multi-colored coat. Yoseph relates his two dreams to his brothers. The brothers conspire to kill Yoseph, but Reuven intervenes and suggests throwing Yoseph into a pit to buy time. During Reuven's absence, Yehudah suggests selling Yoseph into slavery. The brothers gives Yaakov a contrived evidence of Yoseph's death. The story of Yehudah and Tamar ends with their first son, Peretz, being the progenitor of Mashiah. Yoseph is being purchased by Potiphar and is appointed to run Potiphar's household. Potiphar's wife attempts to seduce Yoseph, but Yoseph withstand temptation and flees his mistress's presence. He is thrown into the royal prison and is chosen by the warden to run the prison. Due to his managerial position, Yoseph comes in contact with the former royal wine steward and baker. He successfully interprets their dreams and the wine steward is re-appointed to his position. Yoseph asks the wine steward to intervene on his behalf with Pharaoh. In the year 2227, Yoseph is 28 years old. (Rabbi Aron Tendler, Torah.org)

Why Did Yoseph not Contact his Father?

It says in Minhath Yehudah that one should not be surprised that after Yoseph was appointed to be in charge of Potiphar's house, he did not send a letter to his father to let him know that he was in Egypt. Yoseph thought that his father had passed away as a result of his anguish over the loss of his son. Proof of this is that Joseph asked his brothers several times, "Is your father still alive?" Not only that, but after he made himself known to his brothers he asked again, "Is my father still alive?"

It seems apparent, therefore, that Joseph did not know that his father was alive and that is why he did not send a letter. Because he would have said to himself, "to whom shall I send the letter? To my father and mother who have passed away, or to my brothers who hate me?"

(See Minhath Yehudah, ch. 46, Parashath Wayyesheb)

Could we think of another reason?

Haftara – Amos 2:6-3:8

Haftit: The 10 Tribes of Israel had four sins that Hashem was unhappy with. The first three were Idolatry, Immorality, and Bloodshed. The last is that the Israelite Judges could be bribed. The first three, Hashem was willing to forgive his nation for but the fourth Hashem wasn't willing to forgive. The Haftorah discusses why Hashem – G-d - deals with the Jews strictly. It's because Hashem really does love us and He cares enough about us, to punish us for our sins. This enables us to reflect, do teshuva – repentance - and in turn improve ourselves.

Connection to the Parasha: The prophet Amos accuses certain Israelites for having sold the righteous for money and the poor for shoes. The Parasha acknowledges that Yaakov’s sons sold Yoseph into slavery for money. (haftorahman)
