Dear Mr de László
I feel I must send you this little message from my brother[1] & myself, with most sincere thanks for your kind words about my father.[2] I am indeed thankful that for him the weary days of dwindling strength were comparatively few, he was at work on the third volume of his History of Roman Law[3] almost to within a week of his passing away, &

his sight hearing & thinking powers were perfect to the end. But ever since my mother died in 1887 he [illegible] have been the closest & dearest of friends, he was the absolute inspiration of my life, & I miss this so well-beloved companion more & more every day & every hour. The Eternal Silence is so hard to bear. Your portrait [13603] will be a joy for ever.
With grateful thanks to you and Mrs de Laszlo for your kind thoughts of me, in my great sadness & loneliness,
Yours very sincerely
May Webber
