Challenging the Challenges: Agricultural and Environmental Issues in International Economics
The 2024 WTO meetings in Abu Dhabi highlighted ongoing challenges related to the liberalization of trade in agriculture and the role the international trading system can play in ameliorating environmental concerns. This year's workshop will evaluate how international economics forces interact with these agricultural and environmental challenges. While this is a non-exhaustive list, we are interested in exploring topics related to the impact of globalization on factor misallocation, spatial organization of production and productivity within the agricultural sector, the scaling-up of environmental and agricultural policies, analysis of agricultural and environmental related trade barriers, how the growth of e-commerce and global value chains affect or is affected by rural-urban migration, as well as the impact of trade on deforestation, emissions, food security, and water depletion.
Workshop Details:
The program will be comprised of 8 papers with two discussants for each paper drawing from specialists in Agricultural/Environmental economics as well as International economics, ample time for discussion between papers, a conference dinner, and social event (Durham Bulls Baseball Game). We request that if you wish to submit a paper, but it is not selected for presentation that you would still be willing to serve as a discussant for another paper on the program. This allows us to put together the most engaging conference featuring the strongest combination of presenters and discussants.
Workshop Expenses:
Food, travel, lodging, and event related expenses will be covered for all presenters and discussants.
Workshop Submission Portal and Deadline:
Please be sure to submit your paper for consideration by March 15, though we appreciate earlier submissions if they are ready. While we have a preference for complete drafts, if your work is in progress you may still submit your work and contact the conference organizers about the expected status by the date of the conference.
