Respondus will allow you to bulk upload questions from a Word document into your Moodle course. You will need to use the formatting rules that follow for the file to properly import. Respondus will import multiple choice, multiple correct answer, true-false, matching, short answer, and essay questions. The correct answers will need to be include with the document for all of the question types except essay questions. Respondus will also import any feedback or embedded pictures that you include with the questions and answers.

All questions must be numbered and the numbers followed by a period “.” or a parentheses “)”. The question text must be separated from the number by at least one space. Examples:

7. Who was the first President of the United States?

7) Who was the first President of the United States?

Answers must be labeled alphabetically (upper or lower case will work) and the letters followed by a period “.” or a parentheses “)”. Like questions, the answer text must be separated from the number by at least one space. Example:

7. Who was the first President of the United States?

a. John Hancock

b. Benjamin Franklin

c. George Washington

d. Thomas Jefferson

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Indicating the correct answers

There are two ways to indicate the correct answer for your questions. The first way is to add an asterisk “*” in front of the answer choice. Do not put a space between the asterisk and the answer choice. Example:

7. Who was the first President of the United States?

a. John Hancock

b. Benjamin Franklin

*c. George Washington

d. Thomas Jefferson

The second option is to place a list of the correct answers at the end of the file. The list will need to start with the heading “Answers:” and should not include blank lines between the heading and the answers. This works well if you are using automatic numbering/listing in Word. Example:

Answers:

1. B

2. B

3. C

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Providing feedback (optional)

You can provide feedback for each of the answer options by placing an at symbol “@” on the line following the answer along with the feedback text.  There must be a space between the @ and the feedback text. Example:

8. Who was the second President of the United States?

a. Thomas Jefferson

@ No, Jefferson was the third President of the United States.

b. John Adams

c. Samuel Adams

@ No, Samuel Adams was never president.

You can provide overall feedback for a question by placing an at symbol “@” on the line following the question along with the feedback text.  There must be a space between the @ and the feedback text. Example:

8. Who was a President of the United States?

@ Only Thomas Jefferson was a president out of these three choices.

a. Benjamin Franklin

b. Thomas Jefferson

c. Samuel Adams

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Formatting true/false questions

True/false questions follow the same format as multiple choice (above). One difference is that the answers must always list True (or T) first and then False (or F). Example:

5. John Adams and John Quincy Adams were the first father and son who each served as President of the United States.

a. T

b. F

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Formatting multiple correct answers (multiple response) questions

Questions that will have more than one correct answer follow the same format as multiple choice, but you must include “Type: MR” on the line before the question text. All of the correct answers need to be indicated by an asterisk “*”. Example:

Type: MR

4. Which of the following individuals signed the Declaration of Independence?

*a. John Hancock

*b. Benjamin Franklin

c. George Washington

*d. Thomas Jefferson

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Formatting matching questions

Matching questions must include “Type: MT” on the line before the question text. Each answer must include an equal sign “=” between the two matched items. These items will be randomized on the quiz itself. Example:

Type: MT

3. Match the President to his Vice President.

a. George Washington=John Adams

b. Thomas Jefferson=Aaron Burr

c. Andrew Jackson=Martin Van Buren

No correct answers need to be indicated. These questions can be skipped in the answer key.

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Formatting short answer (fill in the blanks) questions

Short answer or fill in the blank questions must include “Type: S” on the line before the question text. You are only able to add one answer for this type of question, but you can add multiple forms of the answer. Example:

Type: S

2. ______________ was not only one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, but he was also the inventor of the lightning rod and bifocals.

a. Benjamin Franklin

b. Ben Franklin

c. Franklin

If you are adding you answers at the end of the document, simply list all the possible answers on their own line with the number of the question at the beginning. Example:

Answers:

1. A

2. Benjamin Franklin

2. Ben Franklin

2. Franklin

3. True

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Formatting essay questions

Essay questions must include “Type: P” on the line before the question text. (“P” stands for paragraph.) No correct answer will be given for this type of question. Example:

Type: P

15. In your own words, summarize the Declaration of Independence.

checkbox_checked_icon&16.png Save the question file and send it to IRC for importing into Canvas.

Once you have added all your questions and answers, save the file and send it to thstates@anderson.edu or jlreminder@anderson.edu with the name of the quiz and into which class and week/topic it should be loaded. You will receive an email once the quiz is loaded in your course. You will still need to add the settings in Canvas for availability, time, and other options for the quiz.
