Be Direct-Oil Spills Activity

Materials

• chalkboard and overhead projector
• notebook or journal
• pens/pencils
• eye dropper
• large sheet of paper
• eight small pieces of toilet paper or a paper towel
• ruler
• vegetable oil
• overhead transparency sheet (preferably with gridlines)
• overhead pen

Lesson Summary

Students will investigate the relationship between the side of an oil spill and the area that is covered. Students will simulate an oil spill and then graph the relationship between the volume of the oil and the area of the spill to conclude that there is a direct variation relationship between the two.
