Ensemble Descriptions and Specific Requirements (updated 12/1/14)

1) Big Band: See general audition requirements for instrumentalists, listed above. Please contact Mr. Steve Alford (salford2@unca.edu) with any questions.

2) Studio 18: This group will not be re-auditioning for the Spring 2015 term.

Please contact Ms. Wendy Jones (wjones3@unca.edu) with any questions.

3) Scholarship Jazz Ensemble - This group will not be re-auditioning for the Spring 2015 term.

Please contact Dr. Brian Felix (bfelix@unca.edu) with any questions.

4) Ecomusic Ensemble - Throughout the semester, the group will bring to fruition student-composed multimedia pieces that deal with the environment in some way… possibilities range from Cageian “silence” to “Soundscape” and “Acoustic Ecology” pieces a la Brian Eno, to more overtly political pieces. Other compositions deal with biomusic such as whale or birdsong; still others “sonify” physical or mathetmatical phenomena such as chemical formulae, Pi ratios, climatological data and so on. Many works deal with local, place-based phenomena. Admission to the ensemble requires a separate discussion / audition with Dr. Bares.  Tech students and musicians are encouraged to try out.

Please contact Dr. William Bares (wbares@unca.edu) with any questions.

5) Herbie Hancock Ensemble

This ensemble will explore the compositions of legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. The repertoire selection for this semester will be chosen from his more “electric” oriented tunes. See general audition requirements for instrumentalists, listed above. There may be a 1-2 spots available in this ensemble, TBD.

Please contact Dr. Brian Felix (bfelix@unca.edu) with any questions.

6) Latin Jazz Ensemble

The Latin Jazz Ensemble will play standards in Afro-Cuban and Brazilian styles. The group will focus on learning traditional approaches to the styles first, then looking at how they are adapted by Western musicians. There will be no drum set in this ensemble - a minimum of 3 percussionists will be needed to cover hand drums and other instruments. Beyond that, the instrumentation is flexible.

For details, please contact Mr. Matthew Richmond mrichmon@unca.edu.

7) Bluegrass Ensemble

If you are auditioning for the bluegrass ensemble, please prepare two contrasting songs from either the bluegrass repertoire, or a related tradition (folk, old-time, Celtic, blues, Texas swing, etc…), and perform them to the best of your ability.   In the ensemble, you should be prepared to play one or more of the following six instruments:  fiddle (violin), flat-top acoustic guitar, flat-backed mandolin, 5-string banjo (three-finger style, with picks), bass, or Dobro.  In this ensemble, all vocalists must also play an instrument, and all instrumentalists should be prepared to sing.

Please contact Dr. Toby King (jking6@unca.edu) with any questions.
