Bettie McGinnis passed away Sunday, October 30, 2016, with her family by her side.  She was the only child of Frank and Hazel Wass, born July 19, 1918 in Wabash Indiana. She graduated in 1936 from Wabash High School. After attending business school, she worked as a private secretary at the General Tire and Rubber Company.

Bettie and Jerry McGinnis were married June 4,1939 in the Presbyterian Church in Wabash.  They led an active life together; they enjoyed tennis, horseback riding, sailing, water skiing and ice skating. She was a unique and creative person, active in Girl Scouts, Delta Theta Tau philanthropic sorority and in her later years she worked as a volunteer at the Wabash County Museum. She used her artistic talents and interior decorating skills, first in the McGinnis’ Paint and Wallpaper store, owned by Bettie and Jerry and then at the Window Shop in Wabash.  Wabash, Indiana was her home until 2008, when she moved to Bloomington after the death of Jerry in 2007.

She loved poetry, and could recite memorized favorites.  She shared her interest in reading, art, history, and opera with anyone who had the pleasure of getting to know her.  She was a skilled artist and painter.

She is survived by two daughters, Melanie McGinnis Kaye (Roger) of Mountain View, California; Patricia McGinnis Gunkel (Roger) of Bloomington and three grandchildren Matthew (Danielle) Gunkel, of Bloomington, Arminta Gunkel of Frederick, Maryland, David Gunkel of Indianapolis and great granddaughter, Allaura Gunkel (Matthew and Danielle).

Her family will hold a celebration of Bettie’s life at her grandson Matthew’s home in Bloomington.  She will be laid to rest with Jerry in the Friend’s Cemetery in Wabash, Indiana.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wabash County Museum or the Wabash Humane Society.
