My dear Friend,

We are very happy that you haven’t forgotten us and that once again you have sent news of yourself! It has come to our ears that you have been here once or twice, with your dear, honourable wife^[1] too, of whom we have such admiring and fond memories, and it has come as a blow to us that you have never looked us up! Congratulations on your two little boys,^[2] both

such fine and charming children. I wish you great joy of them with all my heart.

My four girls are all growing nicely and they are our pride and joy. My poor wife^[3] has been bed-ridden for three weeks with an ulcerous throat which is causing her enormous suffering, and a middle ear infection on top of that. And thanks to inappropriate treatment from our doctor in Ungvár [now Uzhhorod, Ukraine], she is now

enduring the painful consequences of mercury poisoning. We have been going there for the summer for three years and I have bought a nice little summer place surrounded by vineyards, a flower garden and an orchard. We were in the process of moving back to town and she was so unwell that I couldn’t answer your letter immediately. Your sister came to see me yesterday, bringing her 2 dear little daughters. I don’t consider the younger one to be more talented, the elder

has considerable ability, is ambitious, conscientious and intelligent. It is a pity that she only has one more year of school left and I don’t know if she can be enrolled at the Academy but rest assured that I will give her the soundest advice and that her instruction will be in the most capable hands, so you will be able to see her achieve the results you aim for.

My wife has devoted the utmost dedication to her voice and has developed into a superb singer of Lieder. She will give a concert in Vienna this year, at which point we will pay our respects.

Édes Barátom!

Annyira örültünk, hogy egyszer megint gondoltál ránk és hírt adtál magadról! Egyszer másszor hallottuk, hogy itt jártál, kedves nőd Ő Nagysága is, kinek oly tisztelet- és szeretetteljes emléket őríztünk meg is volt itt pár ízben, mindig zokon esett, hogy felénk sem néztek! Két kis fiadhoz gratulálok, ugyancsak

hatalmas és bájos gyermekek, sok örömötök lesz bennük, amit szívből kivánok.

Az én négy kislányom is szépen fejlődik, és legjobb örömünk és bűszkeségünk. Szegény feleségem már harmadik hete ágybanfakvő beteg és rettenetesen szenvedik fekélyes torok[kal], utána középfülgyuladás [sic] és az Ungvári orvosunk hibás kezelése folytán, most

fájdalmas higanymérgezés következményeit viseli. Ugyanis már három év óta ott nyaralunk, hol igen helyes kis nyaralót vásároltam szőlő, díszkert és gyümölcsös által környezve. Ép hurczolkodóban voltunk, betegen hoztam fel szegény asszonyt és ezért nem feleltem azonnal. Kedves nővéred tegnap nálam járt aranyos 2 leányával, nem találom, hogy a kisebb tehetségesebb, a nagy

elég szép tehetség, ambitosus [sic], szorgalmas és intelligens. Baj, hogy még egy éve tanul csak és úgy nem tudom belehet-e már behozni az Akadémiára, mindenesetre légy nyugodt a legjobb tanácscsal [sic] fogom ellátni és tanítása a legjobb kezekben lesz, úgy hogy el fogod vele azt a czélt érni, a mely kitűztél.

Nőm roppant odaadással képezte énekét és kiváló dalénekesnő lett, ezidén Bécsben is lesz hangversenye akkor tesszük tiszteletésünket.
