How do I know that students are applying mathematical practices?
Take-Aways from the Math and Literacy Article (read by the preK-4 Staff at March 7 In-service)
Read the Article: Linking Literacy and Mathematics: The Support for Common Core Standards for the Mathematical Practice. Dr. Mary Swanson and Dr. Martha Parrott Feb. 2013.
- MP 1: I SOLVE = Identify the problem, Solutions are brainstormed, Obstacles are identified, Look at solutions again, Validate solutions by trying it, Evaluate how well solutions worked.
- MP 1: Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Create
- MP1: Gather data, devise plan by making connections, test plan, look back and see if you got reasonable results.
- MP 1: Thinking mathematically combines both the procedures and dift. levels of questioning/thinking to construct new knowledge.
- MP 2: mental gymnastics - switching gears, guess/check based on a situation, represent math in dift. ways including symbols/graphics, seeing problems from different perspectives. [Using mind maps is one example of this - including making a poster of a “proof” for geometry that shows the thinking of the group]
- MP 3: logical tests - test concepts against another concept. Think-pair-share works well. Demonstrate through manipulatives, movement and products like foldables and other graphic organizers.
- MP 5: some tools are simple, others are complex so be flexible. Provide a drawing before solving the problems. Tools extend, represent and provide a different perspective. Tools can add a dimension of fun. How do students pick the best or most appropriate tool?
- MP 6: Math proficient students communicate precisely in words and representations. Activities for identifying errors/sharing. Precision is linked to proper language use. Develop list of books to use per grade level. Try out Challenge 24/First in Math.
- MP 6: Regular use of writing activities, incorporate technology, peer/collaborative sharing. Will require a lot of modeling at the younger grades.
- MP 7: Engaging to all students. Books should be pleasing visually, focus is on helping students see that everyone can be successful in math. Pick materials that meet the needs of all learning styles. Work on building literacy/math units that are thematic.
- MP 8: Kids need to be able to relate to or have had an experience to be able to dig in and persevere on the problem. The problem should be developmentally appropriate. It is important for the teacher to develop the problem with the above characteristics . The teacher can/should actually ask how this question [problem] relates to or helps them in real life situations.
