You are invited to Congressman Pallone’s 2022 U.S. Service Academy Day!  The event will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at the Waterfront Pier of Naval Weapons Station Earle in Leonardo.

Every year thousands of students contact their elected representatives in order to obtain a nomination to one of the prestigious U.S. Service Academies, and many seek additional information about the process.  Our event will focus on the admissions process and lifestyles as Cadets or Midshipmen at one of the Service Academies.  Interested students will have the opportunity to personally meet with representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and possibly someone from a local ROTC program.

It is our hope that Academy Day will help better prepare the young men and women interested in obtaining a nomination to one of the U.S. Service Academies, as well as the educators working with these students.  Therefore, I kindly ask that you share this information with any interested parties within your schools/districts and on your social media pages.  For your convenience, I have attached a copy of our flyer.

IMPORTANT:  In order to ensure that the base meets their Security Requirements, they require that all adults (18 years and older) must be vetted prior to the event. A cap of 250 attendees. Individuals with a valid DoD issued ID card do not require vetting.

West Point In Person Admissions Briefing Friday, December 10 at 7:00 PM

West Point Admissions, with the New Jersey West Point Field Force and current Cadets (cadet panel), is hosting an in-person event on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 7:00PM (Doors open at 6:30PM) at Seton Hall University, 400 South Orange Ave, South Orange, New Jersey 07079.

The West Point experience is unique and focused around the four pillars of Character Development not available at any other college. Character, Academic, Physical and Military. At West Point you will learn and incorporate the ideals of loyalty, respect, integrity, courage, and honor in your daily life. You will learn failure can make you stronger. Going outside your comfort zone helps you grow. Character is relevant. Grit makes the difference in success in life and never, ever quit!

Academically, you will learn to communicate effectively and think critically and creatively. You will hear about theall-expense paid internship programs available ONLY at West Point. Would you like to spend 3 weeks working in Washington at the National Security Council? How about 3 weeks in England studying Shakespeare? West Point provides a Bachelor of Science degree in the areas of Sciences/Engineering and Humanities, having over 36 majors. How about participation in one of the 130 Cadet Clubs (Academic, Sports, Hobby, Military, Religious, Support)?

Did you know many graduates go on to all-expense paid graduate school right after graduation? Find out how West Point graduates compete for and receive so many Rhodes, Marshall, Hertz, Olmsted, Mitchell, Truman and Fulbright Scholarships after graduation!

Also learn about career opportunities available in 10-15 years after graduation and the benefits of an Army career not found in civilian life.

Seton Hall’s Army ROTC will be present at the event for those interested in Army ROTC as a pathway to officership in the US Army. West Point is not for everyone but if this culture and these opportunities appeal to you, take the chance on a once in a lifetime opportunity! Parents are welcome so they can learn about these opportunities and help support you in this process. Don’t miss this first in-person event in two years! This decision can change your life and maybe the world!

However, this Financial aid 101 webinar will help families understand the actual costs and discover ways to pay for a college education. In addition, we will cover the financial aid forms needed and ways to simplify the process of applying for aid.

Title: Understanding Athletic Recruiting

Date: December 1st, 2021

Time: 7 pm

Registration link

Overview: In this webinar, students and parents will examine recruiting from an educational standpoint to learn how counselors can “coach” them on how to ask the right questions, self-recruit to achieve their athletic goals, and avoid the “Here’s How to Win a Scholarship” distractions from popular media and for-profit recruiting services. We will include the latest trends in athletic recruiting, including specialization, early commitments, the rise of club sports, the nuances of NESCAC and Ivy league recruiting, the accelerated timeline, and the impact of the pandemic on recruiting from both the coaches’ and students’ perspectives.

Free Will: What Is It, and Do We Have It?

1:00pm - 2:00pm EDT, Friday, September 17

Register Here

David Denby, Distinguished Senior Lecturer, Philosophy

Free will makes you a person. Without it, you are not morally responsible for your actions. Indeed, the projects and commitments that your actions express and that give your life meaning would not really be yours at all. At best, you are a mere conduit for events. On the other hand, it is a fundamental presupposition of science, everyday thought, and perhaps rationality itself that every event has a cause. Without causation, the world would not be intelligible, and genuinely rational action would not be possible. The problem is that universal causation seems to be incompatible with freewill, even on the most minimal assumptions about freewill and causation. Being a person means acting freely; an intelligible world in which rational action is possible means universal causation. But we can’t have it both ways! In this talk, we’ll explore this problem and some responses.

These virtual gatherings are intended to mimic the small class sizes found on our campus and will offer the opportunity to connect in real time with current students and fellow applicants. Bring your questions about campus life and be prepared for a lively conversation! Please note, UChicago Student Salons are only available for prospective students.

If you have any more questions, concerns, suggestions, or if you just want to talk, please reach out to us at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu or send an email to askastudent@uchicago.edu to get in touch with a current UChicago student!

UCLA’s Annual Fall Open House Will be Virtual this Year

Our program will be virtual this year and will take place from Saturday, September 25 through Thursday, September 30. To best serve our prospective students and their families, we will offer programming on Saturday and in the evenings Monday through Thursday. Your students and their families will have an opportunity to gain insight about the admission process, learn more about the incredible academic opportunities available to them, participate in student panels, virtually tour campus and experience Bruin pride firsthand.

Registration is required, students can make a reservation here.

2021 U.S. Service Academy Day with Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr.  -Will now be VIRTUAL

This is a follow up to our invitation to you and your students to attend Congressman Frank Pallone’s U.S. Service Academy Day.  Regrettably, due to the surge in Delta variant cases of COVID-19, our office, in conjunction with Naval Weapons Station Earle, has decided to go virtual for our upcoming Academy Day, scheduled on the 18th of September.

This was not an easy decision, as we were really excited about holding an in-person event this year.We have updated the event flyer (attached), as well as the Eventbrite here.  Please note that the program will now begin at 10:00 AM (not 10:30 am as originally planned).
