Free Will: What Is It, and Do We Have It?

1:00pm - 2:00pm EDT, Friday, September 17

Register Here

David Denby, Distinguished Senior Lecturer, Philosophy

Free will makes you a person. Without it, you are not morally responsible for your actions. Indeed, the projects and commitments that your actions express and that give your life meaning would not really be yours at all. At best, you are a mere conduit for events. On the other hand, it is a fundamental presupposition of science, everyday thought, and perhaps rationality itself that every event has a cause. Without causation, the world would not be intelligible, and genuinely rational action would not be possible. The problem is that universal causation seems to be incompatible with freewill, even on the most minimal assumptions about freewill and causation. Being a person means acting freely; an intelligible world in which rational action is possible means universal causation. But we can’t have it both ways! In this talk, we’ll explore this problem and some responses.

2021 U.S. Service Academy Day with Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr.

The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Waterfront Pier of Naval Weapons Station Earle in Leonardo.

Every year thousands of students contact their elected representatives in order to obtain a nomination to one of the prestigious U.S. Service Academies, and many seek additional information about the process.  Our event will focus on the admissions process and lifestyles as Cadets or Midshipmen at one of the Service Academies.  Interested students will have the opportunity to personally meet with representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

It is our hope that Academy Day will help better prepare the young men and women interested in obtaining a nomination to one of the U.S. Service Academies, as well as the educators working with these students.  Therefore, I kindly ask that you share this information with any interested parties within your schools/districts.  For your convenience, I have attached a copy of our flyer.

Please be aware that holding of the event is dependent upon the base remaining at its current Health Protection Condition or better.  If for some reason they need to revert to a more stringent HPCON, we will unfortunately need to cancel the event.  For this reason, it is imperative that everyone who plans to attend (school administrators/staff, students, parents, siblings, participants, etc.), must register for the event at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/us-service-academy-day-tickets-167093995639.  All guests must provide their full name, address, telephone number and email address.

Immersive Learning at Make School — On-Campus or Online

Our new online option is our most recent effort to expand access to high quality, affordable education, reaching students who may not be able or willing to relocate to San Francisco. All Make School students will participate in the same online lectures, and have dedicated student support and opportunities to interact with peers, faculty, teaching assistants, and industry guests whether they opt to enroll on-campus or online.

All Make School applicants will also be held to the same standard during the admissions process. There is only one application and admissions process, during which we take a holistic view of each student’s experience and achievements both inside and outside the classroom. Programmers of all levels, even those without prior experience, are welcome!

As a refresher, Make School is a computer science college that offers a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Computer Science. We have built a project-based curriculum in partnership with Silicon Valley companies such as Lyft, Microsoft, Yelp, and Spotify. The accelerated degree program resembles the typical work week of a tech professional. Because of this unique structure, students are able to graduate in just two and a half years whether they enroll on-campus or online.

If you’re interested in learning more about our new online program or Make School in general, we’d love to see you at our virtual Open House on Saturday, March 6 at 10:30am Pacific Time.
