Formatting Your .TXT, .CSV, or .ZIP Upload

Cerego’s upload tool can add items as vocabulary or associations. Vocabulary items can accommodate sentences and language specific quizzes.  These can be uploaded, or added later in the general item editor.

Text-Only Items (Basic)

These are the simplest pairs that can be formatted simply by specifying a text pair:

anchor (study term);  association (meaning)

Note: This is the only template which does not require a header row.  Separate between fields with tabs, commas, or semicolons (use the same format consistently).  Follow the standard conventions of .CSV formatting for all .TXT files.

Items With Media (advanced: requires a Header Row)

Now you can specify even more attributes for your items, such as:

These attributes are optional, and your items can follow different design patterns customized to your liking (for example, you can choose to have a combination of different media per item). Remember that you can always edit or fine tune these attributes once they have been uploaded.

There are several headings you can use for your items on row 1. Your item must include an Anchor and an Association field.  Anchors and associations require at least one media type text, image, or sound.  They can also accommodate all three!

Anchor: this is your study term or foreign language word.

In your header row, include one or more of the following:

anchor_text (the text for the anchor)

anchor_image (URL or file name for an anchor image)

anchor_sound (URL or file name for an anchor audio file)

Association: this is the meaning or definition of your study term.

In your header row, include one or more of the following:

association_1_text (the text for the association)

association_1_image (URL or file name for an association image)

association_1_sound (URL or file name for an association audio file)

association_1_label (the type of association, ie: Birth Date, Location, Function, etc)

Here is an example of an item that included anchor_image and association_1_text:

Adding Multiple Associations

You may now bulk upload items with more than one association and label.  To do so, simply duplicate the columns containing the Association media types you need.  Then change the number in the column name in the header row.

For example:  To add a second association, change the number in the header to ‘2’:

association_2_text  (the text for the anchor)

association_2_image (URL or file name for an association image)

association_2_sound (URL or file name for an association audio file)

association_2_label (the type of association, ie: Birth Date, Location, Function, etc)

Adding Notes (Optional)

Notes: These are annotations or elaborations on your study term They can help understand the larger context of the item, or act as a lesson.

In your header row, include one or both of the following:

notes_text (text for the note)

notes_image (URL or file name for a notes image)

notes_sound (URL or file name for a notes audio file)

notes_embed ( embed code to a site such as Youtube or Vimeo)

Special Features for Vocabulary Items (Optional)

Add a Reading / Transliteration: If your study word uses a character-based language or foreign alphabet, a reading may be added to aid learners in typing practice (Pinyin would be a transliteration for Chinese characters for example, the meaning would be in english).

anchor_transliteration

Add Sentences: You may practice vocabulary in context.

sentence_1_text  (text for the sentence is required, must include the study word)

sentence_1_translation (this is the sentence meaning)

sentence_1_image (URL or file name for a sentence image)

sentence_1_sound (URL or file name for a sentence audio file)

sentence_1_transliteration (typing alternative for characters, e.g. Pinyin for Chinese)

When you add a sentence, bookend the study word with *, and then put quotes around the whole sentence.

For example, let’s say my study word is gato (Spanish) and the translation is cat in English.

sentence_1_text
“Mi gusta mi *gato*.”

sentence_1_translation

“I like my *cat*.”

Now the sentence is ready to upload.  The quotes will disappear, and the elements in the asterisks will be quizzed.

You may add multiple practice sentences for vocabulary items. To add a second sentence, change the number in the header to ‘2, 3, etc’:

association_2_text (text for the association)

association_2_image (URL or file name for an association image)

association_2_sound (URL or file name for an association audio file)

association_2_label (the type of association, e.g. Birth Date, Location, Function, etc)

Customizing Quizzes

By default your content will be quizzed in both directions if nothing is customized.

For example if this is your item:

you will have 2 quizzes for this item by default.

  1.  “Quiz the Association”

   2. “Quiz the Anchor”

If you would like to specify only a single quiz direction in your spreadsheet, use the following header:

association_1_direction

You can specify the value for each item to be one of:

Duplicate this column for each additional association you’d like to specify:

association_2_direction, association_3_direction, etc.

Customizing Questions

By default, every quiz will ask “Do you know this?” with the answer choices being “Know it” or “Don’t Know it”.  Customizing may add context to what the quiz is asking.

For example:

To add custom questions in your spreadsheet, use the following headers:

anchor_question (for Quiz the Anchor quizzes)

association_1_question (for Quiz the Association quizzes)

If you have multiple associations to customize, duplicate this column for each association:

association_2_question, association_3_question, etc.

Customizing Distractors

If you would rather specify distractors (the wrong choices on a multiple choice quiz) yourself, you may bulk upload as many custom distractors as you like.  If you leave these blank, our algorithms will automatically choose the best distractors from the pool of questions in the set.

Simply use the following headings:

anchor_distractor_1_text >>> anchor_distractor_9_text (anchor distractor text)

anchor_distractor_1_image >>> anchor_distractor_9_image (URL for anchor distractor image)

association_distractor_1_text >>> association_distractor_9_text (association distractor text)

association_distractor_1_image >>> association_distractor_9_image (URL for association distractor image)

Note: Cerego does not support audio distractors.

If you upload distractors, Cerego may mix in other distractors it auto-generates.  If you would like to turn off auto-generated distractors, you will need to add at least 4 distractors of your own to each quiz (typically anchor and association)
