DISCORD SITE WITH MULTIPLE BADGES

Update: there is a class schedule posted and sign ups are open for merit badges. There's a different badge each day, and a sign up form on discord!

Hello! I'm a moderator for a BSA-centric discord server, and right now the youth mods and other members of the server are planning a virtual merit badge week since a lot of members don't have school (thank you COVID-19). We are currently working on gauging interest in merit badges to determine what merit badges to offer first.

If you have scouts interested in earning a merit badge right now, please send them this survey! If you're interested in teaching one, please let me know. 🙂

https://forms.gle/sDjyZVVHUxSP8GA99

The discord is located here:

https://discord.gg/wkF82pr

We have two 21+ moderators, both trained in YPT, as well as additional YPT certified adults and youth on the server. Right now the plan is to hold two or three merit badges in the evening, similar to a scout camp schedule. If there's a lot of interest and/or more volunteers, that may adjust.

---

Edit:

This has really blown up! Thank you guys!!! The mod team has arranged to do test-run classes starting Wednesday, March 18th. This is to ensure that when we do multiple classes we have ensured that the set-up and materials for counselors and scouts will be appropriate and allow for a good merit badge experience for everybody.

Information on signing up for individual classes, as well as what classes are being offered, times, and who is teaching and assisting in them, is in the discord server under the category "Merit Badges," in the "Information" channel.

Our goal is to do a full set of merit badge classes next week and the week after. Additionally we are working with other BSA-centric servers to develop additional workshops and activities for members of other parts of the organization, including Venturing and OA. I will make a second post when they are solid on theirs, with additional information for those interested.

PIEDMONT COUNCIL

https://www.piedmontcouncilbsa.org/mbuonline?fbclid=IwAR1Vfll57gkQH5Onl3EFgShj5YYEAmzJoDey06KpoKeW9wpq8YT--PRHXeo

response to COVID-19, the Piedmont Council, B.S.A. will be offering an online merit badge classes starting Monday, March 30th, 2020 to any scout(s) involved in a Scouts BSA program. We believe that this will help support our youth and their families in these programs as our local communities have suspended all school and / or other group programs with no more than ten individuals present at one time.

Beginning Friday, March 20th, 2020, scouts and their families will be able to select and participate in any of the following online merit badge sessions. Each session will consist of one hour of instruction each day for four consecutive days (Monday – Thursday). The scout(s) will receive a link to log into their class (no less than 24 hours before the start of the class).

Scouts will use these links each day to receive live instruction from a merit badge counselor and guest presenters related to those important topics. Scouts will have various requirements to complete each day before the next day’s classes; instruction will end on Thursday of each week.

Each Friday (of any given week) will be used by merit badge counselors to communicate with those scouts via email to wrap up any final paperwork and / or requirements to help with the completion of the merit badge. Overall, we believe that these online merit badge-based programs will make a great educational supplement to ongoing online efforts being made by our current public, private, and charter schools throughout our impacted region.

Blue cards will be provided digitally to the scout after the week is over and only after the merit badge counselor has verified that the individual scout has completed all listed requirements under that specific merit badge.

Additional Notes (Please Review)

1) Each scout must register separately so we can track their daily progress and attendance. For any scout that is interested to be a participant, there is a minimal $5 cost per class to cover supplies for the online instruction and limited technology resource needs. This minimal cost can be paid on the Piedmont Council website by the scout or their unit leader.

2) Current youth protection guidelines (two - deep leadership and no one-on-one contact) will be followed by all staff under the Piedmont Council, B.S.A. and its merit badge counselors at all times while working with youth and their families; more information can be found below: "Important Excerpts from Advancement Guidelines".

3) All merit badge classes are open to any scout(s) from any council(s) that are currently participating in a Scouts BSA program; all times listed below are located in the eastern time zone of the United States of America.

4) We strongly encourage and recommend that any scout(s) participating in these online classes receive verbal permission from their parents / guardians and their unit leader(s); more information (below) - "Virtual Merit Badge Guidelines".

5) All live merit badge instruction will be provided by an online format called Zoom; an online portal provided by the Piedmont Council, B.S.A.

6) Lastly, please be aware that not all merit badge requirements will be completed by the end of the week; many of these merit badges listed below have outdoor components that will not be able to be completed in an online setting, but all merit badge counselors will be providing various virtual field trip opportunities in the form of video segments to complete some of the more difficult requirements listed under each merit badge.

For more information and updates on the current COVID-19 situation and how Piedmont Council operations have been impacted, see latest email.

Mt Diablo Council

The Mt. Diablo Silverado Council proudly brings to you iBadge 2020!

iBadge is a place where you can sign up for online merit badge sessions and earn them while we are all sheltered in place.  Each badge will be counseled online by a registered merit badge counselor.  Scouts go to https://scoutingevent.com/023-iBadge2020 and register for classes.  Once registered the Scout will get information on how to participate in the class.  Currently we only have a few badges offered but would like to offer more.  Classes are only $5 each!

If YOU are interested in counseling a merit Badge through iBadge please email Joe Barton at joe.barton@scouting.org and let him know what badge you would like to offer and what day(s) and time (s) you would like it offered.  If you do not have a ZOOM or other video conferencing tool, that’s ok too, we can help you set up a platform to teach our Scouts.  Let’s all come together as Scouts and Scouters and help each other advance in our program!
