My dear friend: I have received your affectionate letter in Paris, but when I went to the Vouillemont Hotel in the hope to find you there, you were gone.

As the shortness of my trip did not allow me either to come to London, I have to content myself, on my return to Madrid, to send you my best wishes, together with my immense gratefulness for the kind benevolence we have shown toward me.

I will meet you in Spain or in London, too honoured and content that you should accept to perpetuate my image on one of your immortal paintings.[1]

Please send
