For some time now I have been wanting to pester you with the question “How do you do?” What are you up to? How is your dear family? I was so glad to receive what I am delighted to see is good news from you yesterday – it is a relief to know that your stomach trouble, which I am sure was brought on by lack of exercise following last year’s injury to your leg, is under the supervision of the famous Dapper,^[1]

and that you are taking his remedies; and I hope that this intestinal wizard will set you on the road to health – so that as soon as possible, when you come to see us, you will be able to digest our goulash and túrós-csusza.^[2] I was sorry that you were unable to come this year; and I look forward to receiving you and your dear wife^[3] – to whom please pass on my respects – “in cara patria”^[4] at the end of January next year, but please let me know of your arrival approx. 1 week in advance, so that you can be sure of finding me

me, my family, and most importantly my son János^[5] at home; because at around that time he and I will both be very busy; and I hope that during that period I won’t have to spend time in Vienna at meetings of the Delegation.

Thank you for drawing my attention to the “Woche”;^[6] I will look out for a copy today.

I am here for meetings with a couple of fellow Hungarians (among them Berzeviczy,^[7] Béla Széchenyi and Gyula Forster), as members of the Interparliamentary Committee, but

we are not only dealing with politics; we are seeing plenty of fine things; today we will go to Amsterdam to enjoy the Rix [sic] Museum; and tomorrow there will be a big event here; and then on the 6th I set off for home, via Berlin – and until round about the middle of Oct I will be on my estate at Abony – close to Budapest – with my family, and my son will be able to come down to me for a day or two a week, alongside all his other business.

Kedves Barátom!

Már jó ideje, hogy óhajtottam, a „how duo, you doo?” [sic] kérdésemmel zaklatni. Mit művel? S kedves családja hogy van? Annál inkább örültem, midőn tegnap itt vettem, s mint örvendve látom jó híreit – nagyon helyes hogy –a mint hiszem, múlt évi láb-baj folytán, mozgás hiánya miatt, keletkező gyomor-bajt, a híres Dapper %

per által, alaposan gyógyítatja [sic]; s reménylem hogy ezen gyomor-művész, úgy helyre fogja állítani,– hogy mentül előbb hozzánk jövén, a gulyást, s túrós-csuszát, is jól fogja emészthetni; azt hogy az idén nem jöhetett sajnáltam; s igen szép lesz, ha a tisztelt kedves nejével – kinek szívélyes üdvözletemet küldöm, jövő év Január végén „in cara patria” fogom üdvözölhetni, csak kb 1 héttel előzetessen [sic] kérem jövetelét velem tudatni; hogy bizton engem %

engem, családomat, s főleg János fiamat, otthon találhassa; mert ez idő szerint én is, de ő is igen el vagyunk foglalva; s azt reménylem, hogy az időben; „Delegatio” ülései miatt, nem kell majd Bécsben időzni.

Köszönöm szíves figyelmeztetését a „Woche”re nézve, még ma itt keresni fogom.

Én néhány honfitársammal (ezek között Berzeviczy, Széchenyi Béla, Forster Gyulával) mint az Interparlamentáris Bizottság tagjai, itt ülésezünk; de %
