DLA016-0013  Translation; partial item

P.S. May I ask you for the following great favour: the famous American author John L. Stoddard who lives in a fabulous villa in Meran – you can find out more about him in “Who is Who in America”.[1] He and Mrs. Stoddard had a copy of your portrait of Count Vay which was damaged

by an unhappy accident.[2] Would you be so kind and send a signed copy either to me or directly to Stoddard’s address:

Merano (Alto Adige) Italia (Villa Stoddard)?

The Stoddards are great admirers of your art and at the same time also very committed Catholics (American converts).

Editorial Notes:

Sigmund Münz (1859-1934), Austrian journalist and writer; for biographical notes see [6377].

This item is possibly a postscript to DLA016-0014, letter from Sigmund Münz to de László, 15 October 1926.

[1] John Lawson Stoddard (1850-1931), American author

[2] Monsignor Count Péter Vay de Vaja et Luskod (1864-1948). See DLA016-0005, letter from Sigmund Münz to de László, 17 November 1926, in which Münz thanks de László for his “attention to Stoddard in Meran.” De László painted Count Vay in 1904 [5617], 1906 [5624] and in 1935 [5626]. There also exists a portrait drawing of Count Vay [5619], which was probably executed at the same time as [5617]. The portrait to which Münz is referring is likely either [5617] or [5624]. Between 1905 and 1911, [5617] had been exhibited 13 times in six different countries, whilst in 1926 Count Vay presented [5624] to the Gallery of Modern Art in the Pitti Palace.
