Tax Information for Non-Resident Aliens (NRA)

The JHU Tax Office has purchased a license for GLACIER Tax Prep (free) which is Federal tax preparation software for Nonresident Alien (NRA) Students and Scholars. GLACIER Tax Prep is specifically designed to help NRA’s file a federal tax return so it is user friendly and generates the appropriate federal tax return for each NRA. Click here for more information.

Filing of Federal Taxes for the 2013 year  is due by April 15, 2014.

If you are an International Scholar who has not passed the substantial presence test (spending >183 days of each of the last 3 years in the USA) then you are likely considered a “Non-Resident for Tax Purposes” and are eligible to utilize the GLACIER Tax Prep tool.  Information on accessing this software through the Hopkins Tax Office is now available. Please click here to read the flier and email the tax office directly for access and your questions.   Read more here.

Email the tax office for more information (tax@jhu.edu). The information above is an informal guide. Please contact the tax office if you have any specific concerns.

IN BRIEF: Alternatives to “Alternative” Careers?

A recent Science Careers article discusses ‘alternative careers’ for PhDs: A science Ph.D. remains an excellent credential, and even better preparation for employment. Yet, scientists with Ph.D.s who seek to transition into other careers usually must make their own way, and such transitions are often difficult and slow..
