About this Document

Following the Atlanta-area mass shooting where six Asian women were killed on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, I’ve watched the horror unfold on social media as well as the angry and hurt cries from the AAPI community, especially Asian and Asian-Am women. Working-class Asians and Asian-Ams are especially vulnerable as they continue working on the frontlines and as essential workers in the U.S. not just during the pandemic, but throughout history. This incident already comes on the heels of a disturbing uptick of high-profile attacks on AAPI elderly and women across multiple cities.

I decided to revive the guide following the consecutive high-profile deaths of Christina Yuna Lee on February 13, 2022 and Michelle Alyssa Go on January 15, 2022 in New York City. This was bolstered when I learned that seven Asian women in the same city were attacked in a two-hour span by a single person on February 27, 2022.

This public document will serve as a resource list to support and aid AAPI community members, as well as point both AAPI and non-AAPI allies to groups, journalists, researchers to follow and ways to get involved, where to donate funds to, and brushing up on your awareness of AAPI history. Let’s get to work, folks. It takes all of us.

Soon Park. Hyun J. Grant. Suncha Kim. Yong Yue.

Xiaojie Tan. Daoyou Feng. Delaina Ashley Yaun.

Paul Andre Michels. Yao Pan Ma. Michelle Alyssa Go. Christina Yuna Lee. GuiYing Ma. We will remember you.

**The list above is not exhaustive. Let me know if you’d like me to add a name**

Compassion in Oakland: Compassion in Oakland was formed in response to the surge of anti-Asian attacks -- particularly in California’s Bay Area. Like many, Jacob Azevedo, grew fed up with the violence and in a viral social media post, offered to chaperone anyone within Oakland’s Chinatown neighborhood to help them feel safer. Inspired by his bravery, hundreds messaged him to join him. Thus was born the movement for the community to come together to support our Elderly Asians.

Specific Roles Needed for Compassion in Oakland:

Volunteer Shift Leads: Arrive a few min early in order to brief volunteers, debrief volunteers and collect lanyards and other distributed materials, be on call if any issues arise. Meet cool people and have fun! ( 3-6 hrs/ week)

Social Media Coordinator / Community Manager: Coordinate with Content creator and Copywriter to run social media content, CIO campaigns and manage marketing for fundraisers. Schedule social media content posts, collaborate with other online companies or public figures. Manage social media communication. (Estimated 5 hrs/week )

Content Creator: Create social media content and campaigns. Promote Compassion in Oakland’s services, projects, and media features by developing visual content for our social channels and marketing materials. Work closely with our Copywriter. (Estimated 5 hrs/week )

Copywriter: Help us write marketing and promotional materials for Compassion in Oakland. These materials can range from promotional materials to website/email copy. We are looking for someone to help ensure that all copy is consistent with Compassion in Oakland’s mission by writing, editing, and proofing materials. (Estimated 5 hrs/week )

Translation Services: Chinese, Vietnamese, or whatever language you are proficient in.  Help us translate copy for marketing, social media and the website. (Estimated 1-2 hrs/week )
