THE LETTER HAS NOW BEEN SENT TO THE COLLEGE. ANY MORE SIGNATURES ADDED WILL NOT BE INCLUDED.

AN AMENDMENT TO THE LETTER HAS BEEN ADDED FOLLOWING THE HEAD”S ASSEMBLY ON 19/06/20.

WITH RESPECT TO THE CAUSE PLEASE DO NOT EDIT THE LETTER ITSELF,  SIGN AT THE BOTTOM. (IF THERE IS NO SPACE TO SIGN RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE BOXES AND CHOSE ‘INSERT ROW BELOW’)

Dear Governors, Senior Management and all the teachers at Prior Park College,

To begin, we want to thank you all for your fantastic support and the education that you provide. Especially during the current circumstances, where teachers and other staff are going above and beyond to be there for their students under lockdown.

Whilst we enjoyed our time at Prior hugely, in light of recent events surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, we feel the need to make contact with you regarding our education and curriculum.

In recent weeks many of us have learnt more about racial discrimination online and through social media than through any of our time in education.  This must change: This is why we have received a total of (PENDING) signatures between June 12th 2020 and June 19th 2020 in response to this open letter to you.

It is our belief that we left Prior relatively ignorant in this matter; we were not specifically educated enough in systemic racism or racial oppression, especially concerning British history. We understand that the neglect of such matters is not unique to this school and that it is a problem within the wider British education system. However, Prior has the ability to address this through its curriculum and should take recent events as a catalyst to do so.

It is important to point out that Prior is not a diverse school. Whether or not this is something the school can change, pupils’ knowledge about diversity cannot be reliant on what their BAME peers can provide. It is not the duty of people of colour to educate their white counterparts about the injustices they face in the world; they are children and that responsibility should lie with their teachers.

We know that learning more about race, and the British history of race relations, would help students go into the working world, and wider society, feeling prepared and informed. Many young people today learn more about these subjects from social media posts than in the classroom. Students who chose to study History to A Level learnt about race in the context of the American Civil Rights movement, but their course did not include anything about race in Britain or any significant aspects of Black history. Those of us who only studied History until Form 4 or to GCSE were never taught explicitly about race relations in the US or UK. These topics are too important to only be taught to the minority of students who elect to study History for the entirety of their school careers.

Students have shared their experiences of race and racism from their time at Prior:

“During my time at Prior I experienced casual racism, most of which I didn’t consider malicious (emphasis on most), but a symptom of ignorance and a lack of enthusiasm to be enlightened.”  (Leaver of 2017)

“Speaking from personal experience I only remember race being addressed once. In a PSHE lesson in Sixth Form ‘tackling’ racism which consisted of a 30 minute slideshow, on how everyone should be treated the same.  This was neither informative nor anything that provoked discussion.  We can and need to do better.”  (Leaver of 2019)

At university and in our careers, we have engaged in discussions around race that we were at best only superficially introduced to at school, and at worst totally ignorant of. These are not things that are overly challenging for a secondary school student by any means, they are simply topics that are not included in our curriculums as teenagers. We had PSHE lessons and General Studies in Sixth Form, but there are so many discussions, particularly revolving around mental health and systemic racism that we were not exposed to at school. We should be having open discussions from a young age about the ways in which racism affects all people, from every racial and ethnic background, across all sectors of society. It should not be the case that students leaving secondary school education should have to predominantly teach themselves these vital topics.

We understand the school’s curriculum, although extensive, is ultimately restricted by the topics made available by the exam boards it follows. However, the requests of exam boards do not dictate how a school engages with the specific subject of race. As an independent school, you have flexibility over your curriculum, especially for years Lower 3 to Form 4, and therefore have the ability to re-evaluate the teaching of History for these year groups on these vital topics.

Your Mission Statement presented on the website is “to create an outward-looking ethos which builds links with parents and the local community, and also celebrates the richness of cultures from around the world”. If this is true, then you should be offering a more rounded education than we experienced in our years there. If the highest scholars are those who are able to think critically and reflectively, then learning about systemic racism and white privilege will encourage this kind of thinking and produce well-rounded, confident and compassionate students, with a genuine appreciation for and understanding of diversity and cultures outside of their own. This means confronting and challenging the systemic racism that influences education and teaching about race relations, institutionalised racism and Black histories. If you take a step forward in initiating changes, other schools will follow and we will, as a country, be taking progressive steps towards deconstructing the racist fabric of our society, beginning with the mindsets of its youngest members.

The Head’s assembly on 19th June 2020 discussed the need for a proper conversation around what we teach and how we teach it in regard to history – this is what we are trying to achieve. We do not dispute that a great school produces students that are “educated in how to think about their society, not necessarily educated in what they should or must think”. However, in order to form considered, knowledge-based opinions about their society, these students first need to be better educated on aspects such as systemic racism, racial oppression and Black history.

As The Black Curriculum ( https://www.theblackcurriculum.com/our-work) eloquently puts it;

“As you are aware, the national curriculum excludes Black histories throughout, and omits the vast contributions Black people have made to the UK. As a result, young people who learn from the national curriculum are not given a full or accurate version of British history, which limits their opportunities and futures in an increasingly diverse landscape. Despite numerous calls over the years to reform the national curriculum to incorporate Black histories, these requests have been denied. Learning Black history should not be a choice but should be mandatory. Our curriculum should not be reinforcing the message that a sizable part of the British population are not valued. Black people have been in Britain since Roman times, have contributed to and shaped the foundation of our society. Therefore, we are asking you to specifically include Black histories on the national curriculum to include Black British histories across different subject areas, including History, Citizenship, English and PSHE. By doing so, you can invest in the lives and opportunities of all young people across the UK to become fully rounded citizens and create a better, fairer society.”

Going Further

As well as expanding the curriculum, the school should pledge to take action to ensure that all students feel comfortable and able to raise issues without fear. Prior should integrate the following aims:

  • Learning about, and celebrating our differences, rather making black and minority ethnic students feel like outsiders, uncomfortable, and invisible. Ensuring that all students are taught history and topics relevant to their diverse identities.
  • Granting international students the support to further integrate within the school especially the challenges they face with moving away from home. They deserve to feel safe and welcomed rather than a hostile environment that has pre-conceived notions of what they are like.
  • Responding to race related issues without belittling their experiences and ensuring that there are consequences for racial abuse.

Some specific actions that can be taken:

  • Assigning a teacher as Head of Diversity or to oversee diversity initiatives.
  • Creating a formal procedure for raising race-related issues.
  • Creating awareness days or events in which the various different cultures of the students are celebrated and shared.
  • Appointing Student Diversity Representatives in the boarding house and in Year Groups that can be a point of contact for boarders/students if they have a question, problem or suggestion.
  • Use PSHE lessons to teach and discuss topics like white privilege and unconscious bias
  • Create an anonymous platform for pupils to report incidents and concerns.
  • Ensure comprehensive unconscious bias training as standard for all staff, including support staff, as well as providing workshops for pupils across year groups.

We are aware the Royal High School has just sent out a survey to get a better insight of race relations and experiences at the school. We urge you to do the same. This is a very important step towards ensuring all voices are being heard, and it is through direct actions like these we can have a better idea of what needs to be improved.

Given current events, we are sending this letter as a collective to ask you to please consider re-evaluating your syllabus, and to do so as soon as possible.

We look forward to hearing your ideas and thoughts.

Yours sincerely,

Current students and Alumni, their parents, and all those associated with Prior Park College:
