9-11-18

Good afternoon!  I hope everyone is doing well.  With bad weather expected later in the week we have had to adjust our schedule for this week.

Here are adjustments as of now:

1. The varsity football game scheduled for Friday night at Page has been moved to tomorrow (Wednesday) night.  We will not be attending Page for this game.

2. Rehearsal for Friday afternoon is cancelled.

3. We are waiting to hear from the school system about any possible closings or restrictions.  There have been several rumors, however nothing official has been announced.  For now we are planning on having rehearsal during our regular time on Thursday, but if the school system is closed or has restrictions in place we will not.

Thank you all!

9-10-18

Good afternoon!  First of all, I want to say how happy I was about the band on Friday night.  They did an awesome job and I have received compliments from a lot of people that noticed their efforts.  Great job!

Here are updates for the week of 9-10-18:

1. The weather is going to impact our activities this week.  The away game at Page has been moved to Wednesday night.  We are unsure at this time if we will be attending but we should have a decision made by late tomorrow morning.  I will share that as soon as possible.  We will not rehearse on Friday afternoon, September 14th.

2. We will have full band rehearsal this week on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-8:30pm, depending on weather.  If it is just raining we will have rehearsal.

3. Thank you to everyone that came to the mattress fundraiser meeting.  We had 100 in attendance so the band will receive 500 dollars.  Please help us spread the word about the fundraiser on the 22nd of September.  Please share this page: bit.ly/beds4reaganhs

Thank you all and please let me know if you have any questions.

9-3-18

Good evening and Happy Labor Day.  I hope that you had a restful weekend.  It was a shame to not be able to perform on Friday night, but we will be that much more excited to put on a show this Friday night!

Here are updates for the week of 9-3-18:

1. Rehearsal will be on Tuesday and Thursday this week from 5:30-8:30pm.

3. We have a home game vs. Mount Tabor this Friday night.  We will rehearse from 4:00-5:30pm, have dinner, and do the game.  We will perform the show at halftime and after the game.  Attire will be black BOR shirts, khaki shorts, marching band shoes, and black socks.

4. If you would like to have an ad in the program for the WSFCS Band Jamboree I need it by tomorrow.  I have attached the form.

5. We are waiting on schedules to plan itineraries for our competitions.  Hopefully those will be out soon.  For now plan on meeting around 8:00am on September 29th and October 13th, and  around 1:00pm on October 6th.

Thank you and have a great week!

8-20-18

Good evening!  On Thursday the Career Center has open house from 5:30-7:30pm.  I have some information about Thursday (especially for the Career Center students) so please read carefully.

Rehearsal on Thursday (8-23-18) will be from 7:00pm-9:30pm.  We had to go later in the day due to it being a teacher workday and cars covering the parking lot and a home JV game in the stadium.

Career Center students- Open house starts at 5:30pm.  The biggest thing you will need to do is get parking passes.  Dr. Nichols assured me that they would start closer to 5:15pm selling parking passes, if not before.  He suggests that you be in line by 5:00pm and you should get through pretty quick.  He also mentioned that if you are an afternoon student (which is few of you) to wait until Monday as they will have more than enough parking in the afternoon.  To speed things up, please fill out the forms before arriving to the Career Center.  The forms can be found here.  Additional parking information can be found here.  You will need to make sure you have purchased your permit from Reagan before then as well.

Thank you all and have a good night.  I look forward to rehearsal tomorrow!

8-20-18

Good evening!  I hope everyone is having a great week.

Here are updates for the week of 8-20-18:

1. The full band will rehearse on Tuesday and Thursday this week from 5:30-8:30pm, on Friday from 4:00-5:30pm, and Saturday from 9:am-12:00pm.

2. We are currently experiencing difficulties with our website.  I have been in contact with our host and this should be resolved soon.  I have attached a calendar in case you need to keep up with dates.

3. On Friday after our full band rehearsal that will conclude at 5:30pm we will have dinner for students going to the away game at North Forsyth.  This week Pep Band A will be attending.  If you are unable to go you will need to find someone as a replacement.

4. Our Parent Meeting for the Mattress Fundraiser is on September 7th at 6:00pm.  It is extremely important everyone is there.

5. Make sure you have turned in Attractions Books or do it this week.  Sherri King will be here to collect those or you can put it in the box.

Thank you all and I look forward to a great week!

8-12-18

Good evening and congratulations on a great band camp!  Here are updates for the week:

1. We will rehearse on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday this week from 5:30-8:30pm.  Bring water and eat before you come.  The goal is to clean the opener and start setting drill for movement 2.

2. We will not have percussion and guard sectionals tomorrow.  I will be out of town doing a clinic with another band.

3. We will have an adjusted time for rehearsal on Thursday, April 23rd to accommodate open house at the career center.  I will let you know the time Tuesday evening.

4. The mattress fundraiser is coming up.  Parents, please mark your calendar to attend a meeting on Friday, September 7th at 6:00pm.  We also have a home football game this evening please come to the meeting.  Start spreading the word to people in the community.  The fundraiser itself is on September 22nd.

7-29-18

Good morning!  The Bluecoats are here and we are happy to host.  We needed to make a few slight adjustments this morning to accommodate their needs, but it should affect us little to none.

When you arrive for Everything Day today please use the gate at the baseball fields on Balsom Road.  The others will be locked.  Please enter through the doors at the cafeteria and we will be set up to you left down the hallway.  Please be quiet in the cafeteria because there are drivers and staff sleeping in the auditorium.

The rehearsal schedule has not changed that I am aware of.  They will begin at noon and end at 4:00pm.  If you would like to watch rehearsal (and I encourage you to do so) please walk around the front of the school.  Their food trailer is parked in the loop but you will be fine to walk to their practice areas.  They will be on the grass fields behind the band room.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone today!

7-25-18

As you know the Bluecoats will be joining us this Sunday to stay and rehearse at Reagan prior to their show at Nightbeat.  This is awesome and if you have never seen a group like this rehearse I really encourage you to check it out.  Here are a few things to know and do for Sunday as it relates to the Bluecoats.

Bluecoats Tentative Rehearsal Schedule for Sunday (7-29-18):
12:00pm: Personal Training
12:30pm: Visual
1:45pm: Sectionals
2:45pm: Full Ensemble
4:00pm: Eat, Pack, Load
6:00pm: Depart Reagan
9:10pm: Performance at Nightbeat

1. Please be respectful of their space inside the building.  Please do not enter any space used by them including either gym, auditorium, bandroom, dressing rooms, locker room areas, etc.
2. Although they will be rehearsing outside, many of their drivers, support staff, etc will be sleeping inside during the day.  They will mostly be in the auditorium and band room areas on the 100 hallway.  Please be quiet and do not disturb them.
3. Everything Day will take place in the hallway from the media center to the academic wing.  Please enter through the doors at the cafeteria.  The gate to that parking lot will be open.
4. We are excited and proud to have alumni Jonathan Amar and Ben Pierce marching with the Bluecoats this year.  I'm sure they would love to see you!  (Be careful not to interrupt their rehearsal:)).
5. They will probably end their Full Ensemble Rehearsal with a run-through.  It will be awesome so try to check it out.  I would imagine it will be around 3:30pm.
6. All students and parents need to be finished with Everything Day by 4:00pm so I would suggest getting there by 3:00pm.

Thank you all and I am really excited to see these guys.  See you tomorrow (Leadership Team) or Sunday!

7-24-18

12-9-17

Good evening.  We once again have schedule changes that I was informed of a few minutes ago.  We will not be participating in the Lewisville Parade tomorrow and the marching band banquet will need to be postponed.  I am as disappointed as anyone since we had a special day for our program planned for tomorrow with both of those events.

We will be doing fruit pick-up tomorrow since it will involve parents instead of students.  The times for pick-up will be from 1:00-3:30pm.  If you are not able to pick-up fruit at that time please let me know and I will make an alternate arrangement for you.  Thank you again to Najila Pucciariello and other parent volunteers for their help to make this happen.

Thank you all and we will make the most of it!  If you need anything please let me know.

12-8-17

Good afternoon.  Due to inclement weather we have several changes in schedule for the weekend.

Fruit will be delivered this afternoon around 3:15pm.  If you are available to help unload we could use the help.  We would like to get it unloaded as quick as possible so we can all go home before the weather turns worse.  We home to be finished by 4:00pm.  With that being said, safety is most important to us so if you are driving (especially students) we encourage you to get home as soon as possible.

Fruit pick-up will not be tomorrow morning.  We will give fruit out on Sunday before and after the parade (1:00-2:00 and 4:00-5:00).  If you need to set up a time other than that please contact Najila Pucciariello (nspuccuariello@gmail.com).

The Jazz 1 performance tomorrow has been cancelled.  They have rescheduled for next weekend on the 16th, however I am unsure at this time if we will participate.  We will check schedules and make a decision in class on Monday.

Thank you all!  Stay safe and enjoy the snow!

Congratulations again on a fine marching band season.  We had a very, very good band.

Thank you all and please let me know if you have any questions.

10-9-17

Good afternoon and congratulations to the BOR for their championship performance on Saturday.  I was as disappointed as any by the show being moved inside but it was the right call and I appreciate the band at North Iredell for their hospitality to our students.  Although it was in the gym, the band sounded terrific and still put on a very exciting show.  I also was impressed with the way the students conducted themselves and ability to be flexible as things changed throughout the day.

Here are some updates for the week:

2.  Sign-ups for the game will be available on Wednesday.

3.  If you would like extra help on your All-County solo you are welcome to stay after school on Wednesday.  It is also a great time to practice on Tuesday and Thursday before band rehearsal.

Schedule Change 8-29-17

Good evening BOR!  Thanks for a great rehearsal tonight band!  We got the news this afternoon that the varsity football game will be moved to Thursday of this week due to expected poor weather conditions on Friday.  Here are the details that we have at this time.

The Parent Meeting for the Mattress Fundraiser has been rescheduled to 7:30pm on September 7th.  Please mark your calendars and plan to join us.

We will have our rehearsal as planned on Friday from 4:00-6:00pm.

Please plan to be flexible and we will update you as Mr. Tysor and I get information.  We do plan to practice regardless of the weather (possible inside rehearsal if needed).

The show is coming along nicely and I look forward to the band getting the opportunity to share it with you!  If you need anything please let me know.  Thank you!

Parent Meeting / Preview Show / Spiritwear

Good morning.  Camp is off to a good start this morning and we are enjoying the great weather!  We are going to get some good work done today.

Tomorrow (Thursday), we are doing a meeting for all BOR parents at 7:00pm in the band room.  The boosters are going to go over several things as we prepare for our first football game (8-18-17) and the upcoming competition season.  We will also talk about fundraising and opportunities there for our students.

After our meeting we will be performing a preview for all of our parents.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can do it outside for you.  It will begin with a chance for you to watch a few minutes of rehearsal followed by a run of the show (what we have on the field) and some stand tunes.  Please join us for this!

Also, if you would like to purchase BOR Spiritwear I have attached a flyer for you to fill out and bring with you to the meeting.  We would love to see everyone wearing BOR shirts and hoodies at our games and competitions.  We will have forms here as well for you to fill out tomorrow.

Thank you all and please let me know if I can do anything for you.  We are looking forward to another great day of camp!

Concert Band/Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble MPA

Greetings!

It is that time of the year for the bands to prepare for their annual Assessment (MPA).  The North Carolina assessment for concert bands consists of a performance of three prepared pieces of music and sight-reading for a panel of judges.  The band’s rating is published online, in the North Carolina Music Educator magazine, and sent to the school’s administrators.  Participation by every student is important and constitutes a large portion of their grade (40% for the quarter).

Listed below are the days for the Reagan concert ensemble assessments.  Please note that these dates have been on the calendar since March of 2016, are on Haiku and the google calendar on www.bandofraiders.org, on the syllabus, the list of dates from the beginning of the year, and have been listed in every weekly email Mr. Craft has sent out to parents since August.  These dates are non-negotiable and cannot be changed.  The exact itinerary will not be set until late-February, early-March, and we will send out a detailed itinerary when we receive those times.

Symphonic Band – March 16th in the morning (students will likely need to arrange transportation to school that day, though they will be back by roughly 3rd period)

Wind Ensemble – March 16th in the afternoon/evening

Concert Band – March 23rd in the afternoon/evening

Attending the assessment does not count as an absence and will not reflect against exam exemptions.  However, students are responsible for any work they miss in their classes.

Location:  Broyhill Civic Center, Lenoir NC (all performances are free and open to the public)

Dress:  Concert Dress

Travel:  We will travel by activity bus to and from the event.  We ask that each student contribute a $5 fee to help offset the cost of gas and for the activity bus drivers (students in multiple concert ensembles need to only pay once).  This $5 charge will be added to your Charms account, which is the preferred payment method (checks can be made payable to Reagan Band Boosters).  If this fee is a hardship for your family, please communicate with us.

We wish to see that all students attend assessment.  However, we reserve the right to not allow a student to attend if he or she 1) does not pass their assessment playing tests 2) demonstrates non-compliance, disrespect, or disregard for school rules that would make the teachers uncomfortable with taking the student off campus.

A friendly reminder we also have preview concerts for parents coming up.  These concerts are free for parents, though please note that they will include a clinic afterward from our guest clinician.

Concert Band Preview – March 2nd from 4pm – 5:30pm

Symphonic Band Preview – March 2nd from 6:30pm – 8pm

Wind Ensemble Preview – February 28th from 6:30pm – 8pm

Please fill out the attached medical form and return to Mr. Craft

·       Honors Credit:  Upon seeing your completed audition score, I will finalize the honors credit grade in the gradebook (for whom this applies).

Directors,

The Wachovia Winds is growing into two ensembles, and, Co-Founder Phillip Riggs is returning to share conducting responsibilities.

Another change for this year is auditions. Students are asked to upload a video audition to our new website. Students will record the scale and solo requirements for their grade level. (see link below for instructions and more details).

Our first performance will be March 25, in the Stevens Center, downtown Winston-Salem. Our Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will perform, followed by the UNCSA Wind Ensemble under the direction of Mark Norman. (Thanks to Dr. Norman for the invitation.) In a very special event, our wind ensemble members will join the UNCSA Wind Ensemble for a performance of Mason Bates’ “Mothership”, and one of our members will be selected to perform one of the improvised solos.

Our final performance will be the afternoon of May 21, in Brendle Recital Hall, WFU. (You know we will have something special planned for this.)

Two of our primary goals are: 1. To offer the very best wind and percussion musicians in the Triad an opportunity to perform together, in a similar manner, but in addition to their all-county/all-district/all-state band experiences. 2. To include the many students who want the opportunity to perform in an ensemble in addition to their school ensembles.

Our hope is to enhance the musical experience of band students throughout the Triad. Participating students must be enrolled in their school band program.

Please share this information with your students, parents, and other directors that might be interested.

The audition deadline is: January 1, 2017

This Week In Marching Band

11.12.16

Hi Everyone

Congratulations to all of the students on an incredible marching season.   This was by far our best marching band, and I am incredibly proud of all students.

Thank you to our staff:  Mr. Tysor, Mr. Dills, Mr. Brown, Ms. Tedrow, Mr. Green, Mr. McBride, and Mr. Dickens.  Great students and great teaching is always a recipe for success.

Thank you to our parents who helped coordinate instruments, travel, volunteers, chaperones, props, and all of the other craziness that comes from volunteering in marching band.

Thank you to our bus drivers for always taking good care of us.  We would literally never leave the school if it wasn’t for them.

The staff is going to meet soon to discuss our 2017 marching band plans.  Please check the Google calendar on www.bandofraiders.org, as many of the dates for next year are already up including:

Band Camp Week 1:  July 31 – Aug. 4

Band Camp Week 2:  Aug. 7 – Aug. 11

Thanks for a great season!

12/3 WS Parade Plan

Hi Everyone

This one is one of my favorites!  Please read the info below.

Make sure to bring your ugly sweater.  Get as creative as you want!  Still don't have one?  Wear something that represents Reagan and dress it up.

New parents:  We do NOT wear the uniform jacket and shako for these parades.  Only the sweaters and headgear of your choice.  We still wear marching shoes and bibs (marching pants).

Mr. Tysor will buy the student who has a better sweater than him a Cookout milkshake and will give them a daily high five until they graduate!

The parade will be on 4th street.  We are closer to the end of the parade this year.  I'm looking forward to it!

Schedule:

12/3 WS Parade Schedule

2:00pm - Arrive at Reagan, dress in bibs (bring ugly sweater and marching shoes, wear over bibs).

2:30pm - Rehearsal

4:30pm - Depart for downtown

5pm - Arrive Downtown

6:30pm - Approximate arrival back to Reagan, unload, go home

Dress:  Marching shoes, black socks, bibs, ugly sweater, head gear of your choice.

Please keep in mind that we wear marching shoes, marching band bibs, and ugly Christmas sweaters for those two parades.  If you do not own an ugly Christmas sweater, you are welcome to purchase one or make one, or wear a Reagan sweater.

Times and details will come when I receive them.  Thanks!

Have a great week!

This Week In Marching Band 11.6

Hi Everyone

I am excited about about the Veteran’s Day Parade!  This, in my opinion, is one of the most important performances we will do the entire year!

Here is the schedule:  if you have any questions, please contact Mr. Tysor at ktysor@wsfcs.k12.nc.us, because I will be in Texas with Jacob at the All-National Concert Band!

11/10 - Veterans Day Parade Rehearsal -  4 – 5:30pm

11/11 – Veterans Day Parade

8:15am - Arrive at Reagan and dress

8:45am - Depart Reagan

10am - Parade starts downtown

11:30am - Arrive back at Reagan, change out, go home!

Christmas/Holiday Parades Heads Up:  As of last year, we started an incredibly popular tradition of marching in “ugly christmas sweaters” and our bibs and marching shoes.  While I will not require anyone to purchase or make the sweater, I HIGHLY encourage full participation!  If you do not own an ugly Christmas/holiday sweater, you can wear something that reflects Reagan!   Let me know if you have any questions!

Have a great week!

This Last Contest Week In Marching Band

10.9.16

Hi Everyone

Congratulations on another great performance.  I told the students their goal was to have fun and walk off the field with a smile on their faces.  I hope we accomplished this!

My sincere apologies for running so late on Saturday.  The awards ceremony started late and ran very, very, very, very long.  That will not be the case for this final contest weekend, as we should be back roughly around 5pm – 6pm (schedule to come soon!).

Last major week in marching band!  See schedule below:

Important Announcements:

·       It looks like the weather for Jamboree will be clear!  We will go with the 4 – 5:30pm schedule for Tuesday.

·       Senior Parents need to fill out this form for Senior Night!

·       If you are going on the Orlando trip, the first deposit is due Oct. 21st.  You can find the PDF with information on www.bandofraiders.org.

·       Scores from Saturday are in the Google Drive folder.

Rehearsals This Week:

Monday – Jamboree! (see below)

Tuesday – 4pm – 5:30pm

Thursday - 5:30pm - 8:30pm

Friday - 4:00pm - 5:15pm and Homecoming Game

Saturday - Contest at Forbush High School and East Surry High School

Friday Schedule

4pm - Rehearsal in stadium for all students.

5:15pm - Finish Rehearsal

5:30pm - Dinner

7:30pm – Game Starts (no half-time for Homecoming)

10:00pm-ish – Post-Game Performance/Pack-Up

Jamboree Schedule - Monday

Dress - BOR shirts, comfortable clothing.

Schedule:

Students need to report to the bandroom at the beginning of 4th lunch.  If 4th lunch is your regular lunch period, you will need to go to 3rd lunch.

2pm - Depart Reagan High School (teachers should not mark students absent from 4th period)

5pm - Jamboree Starts (dinner provided as part of band fee)

7:30pm - Approximate Reagan Performance.  Do not risk trying to show up in time for Reagan only, as the schedule has been known to fluctuate.

9:00pm - Approximate end of Jamboree.

How Much Does It Cost for Spectators to Attend? - $5 and the event starts at 5pm.

Location - West Forsyth High School

How Does Transportation Work? - A bus will take the students from school at 2pm to West (with the exception of a middle school students).  Because there are not enough buses to bring the students back to Reagan, students need to be picked up from West Forsyth by their parents at the end of the event (see schedule below).

Students at the Career Center need to make plans to leave in time to get on the bus from Reagan.  Students may not drive and park at West Forsyth.   Reagan and Career Center faculty have been notified not to mark you absent, but I will provide you will a written letter to give to your teachers as well.

In the past, middle school students have taken the bus with their middle school band.  We make sure their uniform is waiting for them at the school.

How Does the Absence from 4th Period Work? - The small portion of school that the students will miss (roughly 4th period) should not be counted against their grade or exam exemptions.

What Happens to Uniforms and Instruments at the End of the Event? - Students will change out of uniforms after the event and return their uniforms to the trailer at the end of the event.  Large equipment needs to be loaded on the trailer.  Personal instruments need to go home with students.

Where does my backpack go? - We store backpacks on the trailer until the end of the event when the students can grab them and take them home.

Next Week:

Thursday – 4pm – 5:15pm rehearsal and Home Game (Senior Night)

Important Reminders:

Parents can link their Harris Teeter VIC cards to the band 5932 and we will get money

MARCHING BAND CONTESTS

Marching Band Contests are competitive events that showcase the talents of students in marching band.  Band students and parents tend to be more supportive of one another than other "competitive" groups.

FACTS

·       Bands are grouped into classes based on either band size, wind number, or school size.  Each contest has different procedures regarding class.

·       The schedule is determined by the number of bands, size of the bands, or postmark (depends on the contest).  Because contests are fundraisers directors will often wait until the week of the contest to make sure that everyone is registered and they send out the schedule.  This is why I do not know our performance time until it is sent to me by the director of the contest.

·       Contests can have anywhere from 7 to 20+ bands.

·       Contests are open to the public and there is a cost to get into the contest for spectators (usually ranges around $5).  Band students, staff, chaperones, and helpers get in free.

·       There is an awards ceremony at the end of the contest (sometimes also in the middle for smaller bands).

·       Attendance is incredibly important at contests for two reasons: 1)  holes in the show create incorrect intervals that count against our marching score 2) for safety reasons such as confusion in difficult drill moves because of missing members or important jobs not taken care of because the member in charge is not there (an example being the Bassett broken leg incident 3 years ago).  Please do your best to make sure you can attend.

·       There are always concessions available and often times programs and merchandise is sold.  Students should bring money with them to band contests.  The band fee does not cover the cost of food on contest days.

TYPES OF BAND CONTESTS

There are different kinds of band contests.  There is no requirement for bands to attend any kind of specific contest, and Reagan different ones depending on the year, location, etc.

For instance, some band contests are independently run by the host school.  In this situation, the host school determines everything from the schedule, class sizes, judges, contest grading system, etc.  These contests allow for the host school to have complete freedom over every aspect of their contest.   Examples of contests we regularly attend that are like this include North Forsyth, East Surry, North Iredell East Rowan (2012), Northwest Guilford (2012), etc.

North Carolina also has several North Carolina Bandmasters Association (NCBA) state sanctioned contests.  These contests are regulated by the NCBA and are partnered with a host school.  The contest must use the approved grading system and sheets, has strict rules in terms of parent involvement in the show, as well as time limits.  Judges must also be regularly trained and on an approved list (Mr. Craft and Mr. Green are both approved judges).  The host school can determine aspects of the contest such as the schedule, merchandise, how the contest runs, etc.  NCBA determines that the policies are put in place, the timing of the performances is correct, the judges are trained and have no affiliations with bands that are competing at the contest, and that the rules and regulations are upheld.  The scores from these contests are posted on the NCBA website each year.

The NCBA also allows for marching Band Music Performance Adjudications (MPA).  Bands perform for a rating (Superior, Excellent, Average, Below Average, Poor), not for a competitive ranking.  These are often paired with a state sanctioned show where the MPA event is in the morning and the state sanctioned event is in the evening.  Reagan received a Superior rating at North Carolina's first marching band MPA in 2012.

There are also national contest circuits such as Bands of America (BOA) and US Bands.  These contest have similar stringent rules to the NCBA system and are consistently applied across the country.  Judges must be trained and are usually nationally recognized and flown across the country for the events.  These contests have regional events and a national championship held each year.  Some of the differences between these shows and others include highly competitive bands, very large class sizes, and very few (if any) trophies and caption awards.  Reagan is attending the Bands of America Wake Forest Regional this year.

WHAT THE JUDGES ARE LOOKING FOR

·       Music -

o   Characteristic tone quality

o   dynamic contrast

o   phrasing

o   clarity

o   precision, etc.

·       Marching -

o   Consistency of style

o   clarity of forms

o   correct spacing and intervals

o   correct starts and stops to movements, etc.

·       General Effect -

o   How well the colorguard is integrated in to the form,

o   if the colorguard writing fits the music,

o   does the presentation make sense?

o   whether or not the drill fits the music and theme

o   Is the music and visual effect coordinated to tell a complete story?

o   Does the audience respond to the show? (read below)

HOW THE PARENTS CAN HELP

·       Make friends with band parents from other schools.

·       Enthusiastically cheer on the other bands and encourage your new friends to cheer on our school.

·       Don't sit in clumps of Reagan parents in the stands, spread out so that it is not just the Reagan section cheering us on (the East Davidson parents are very good at doing this).

MARCHING BAND CONTEST ETIQUETTE

One of the most important parts of a band show is the audience. It is very disappointing for band members who spend weeks and months preparing a show to walk into a large stadium and find that the seats are empty. There are many types of spectators at a band show and they have many different reasons for coming to the show. However, they all have one thing in common and that is that they should be allowed to enjoy the experience.

Things you should do at a band show.

· Support all bands. Regardless of which band is on the field you should applaud or even cheer when they do a good job. Reaction from the crowd will encourage the band to perform better and will result in a more enjoyable show for the audience.

· Watch the whole show. Observe different elements of the bands performance. Your interest may be percussion but, you might be surprised with the work the colorguard is doing. Often, several things are going on at once in a show. If you watch a show several times you may see something new on each occasion.

· Show up early. This is especially true for supporters of larger class bands. Many smaller class bands have great shows. Arrive early at the next show and see what you have been missing.

· Buy something from the concession stand. In many cases a band competition may be the major source of a band programs yearly budget. They have made a large investment and would appreciate your support. In most cases you will find that the prices are much less than what you will pay at your local movie theater.

Things that you should avoid.

It is important to realize that although it is fun to visit with family and friends during a contest, it is unfair to distract other spectators from enjoying the show. This is true at any performance, including a marching band performance. Be respectful of all other spectators and hopefully they will extend you the same courtesy.

· Do not leave or enter the stadium while a band is performing. Try to avoid any unnecessary movement, especially while a band is performing. At most contest the time for each band is fifteen minutes. Each show last around 7 to 9 minutes so that gives you plenty of time between bands to leave the seating area for concessions or to enter the stadium.

· Do not talk on your cell phone. Turn off your cell phone or set it to vibrate. If someone calls you on your cell phone you can return the call between bands. Please do not talk on your phone during a performance.

· Do not allow children to play in the stands and distract other spectators. Obviously, children are the future of this activity. It is good for them to see why big brother and big sister are always at practice and are not at home. However for their safety and as a courtesy to others they should not be allowed to run up and down steps and play in the aisles so others may enjoy the show.

· Do not make negative comments about other bands. That color guard uniform that you don’t like may have been made by that guard members mother that is sitting behind you. That man sitting in front of you could be the arranger or drill designer or even the band director. If you don’t have something nice to say then you probably should not say it. Remember how hard your bands members have worked to get their show ready for the field. Chances are that the other bands have worked just as hard to get their show ready.

· Do not obstruct the view of others. Please avoid standing in front of people trying to watch the show. If you have a banner to display, try to do so from the top of the stands or in some way that others can still see the bands.

· Do not boo other bands or the contest results during the awards. Unfortunately every one is not going to agree on contest results. Booing the award winners or the judges will not accomplish positive results.

If this is your first competition season with us, I think you will have a blast!  Please contact me if you have any questions!

What is the Jamboree?

The WSFCS Band Jamboree is a showcase of all of the bands in the WSFCS system.  All bands perform their half-time shows one after another (like a competition).  The grand finale is a mass band performance of all the high school groups conducted by Dr. Emory and features the 8th grade band students in attendance.  It is a great event!

Date - Monday, October 10th (check your email!  This date was changed from the original date two weeks ago).

In the past, middle school students have taken the bus with their middle school band.  We make sure their uniform is waiting for them at the school.

How Does Food Work? - Students will have a choice of a veggie or meat Subway meal (as part of their band fee), and may continue to purchase concessions throughout the event at their own expense.

Jamboree Ads? - If you or someone you know would like to purchase an ad for the program, send me the form and jpeg.  Make checks payable to Reagan Band Boosters.

How Much Does It Cost for Spectators to Attend? - $5 and the event starts at 5pm.

Schedule:

Students need to report to the bandroom at the beginning of 4th lunch.  If 4th lunch is your regular lunch period, you will need to go to 3rd lunch.

2pm - Depart Reagan High School (teachers should not mark students absent from 4th period)

5pm - Jamboree Starts

7:30pm - Approximate Reagan Performance.  I would not risk trying to show up in time for Reagan only.

This is a great event and I HIGHLY recommend that parents attend!

A big “thank you” to the staff for their work the past two weeks:  Kenny Tysor, Danny Green, Greg Dills, Sean McBride, Jeff Brown, Maddie Tedrow, Brittany Haste, Sarah Smith, Josh Dickens, and Andrew Blair.

Another HUGE “thank you” to all the parents and volunteers who gave time this week so the students could have a great camp.
