SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY FRAMEWORK

An 8-Step Process for Building a Purpose-Driven Social Media Strategy

A successful social media strategy isn't about posting every day it's about posting with purpose. Below is the exact process I use as a Social Media Manager to build strategies that drive real results, illustrated with easy-to-follow examples using a boutique bakery as the sample brand.

1. Understand the Brand

Learn the business, products/services, target audience and brand voice before creating a single post. Strategy without brand context is just guessing.

Example Sweet Crumb Bakery

  • Business: A boutique bakery known for custom celebration cakes
  • Audience: Local women aged 25-45 planning birthdays, weddings and events
  • Brand voice: Warm, playful, and a little indulgent

2. Define Clear Goals

Every strategy starts with a goal - brand awareness, engagement, leads or sales. The goal determines which metrics matter and what content gets prioritized.

Example - Sweet Crumb Bakery

  • Goal: Generate 20 custom cake inquiries per month
  • This means content should prioritize saves, shares and DMs not just likes

3. Research the Audience

Understand who the audience is, what they like, when they're active and what content they actually engage with not just who you assume they are.

Example - Sweet Crumb Bakery

  • Most active 7–9 PM on Instagram and Pinterest while planning events
  • Engages most with behind-the-scenes cake decorating videos, not static product shots

4. Analyze Competitors

Study what's working in the industry and identify gaps or opportunities to help the brand stand out rather than blend in.

Example - Sweet Crumb Bakery

  • Competitors post finished cakes only -  an opportunity to own the 'process' content (mixing, decorating, reveals)
  • No local competitor uses Reels consistently - a clear content gap to fill first

5. Create Content Pillars

Every piece of content should fall under a pillar so the feed stays balanced and purposeful: Educational, Promotional, Entertaining, and Community-building.

Pillar

Example - Sweet Crumb Bakery

Educational

"3 signs your cake order should be placed early" carousel

Promotional

Limited-time flavor drop with a countdown sticker

Entertaining

Fast-motion Reel of a cake transformation

Community-building

Customer feature: real celebration photos with the cake

6. Build a Content Calendar

Posts are planned in advance to maintain consistency and make sure every piece of content ties back to a pillar and a goal.

Day

Pillar

Post Idea

Mon

Educational

Cake care tips carousel

Wed

Entertaining

Decorating Reel

Fri

Promotional

Weekend flavor special

Sun

Community-building

Customer celebration repost

7. Optimize & Publish

Captions, keywords, hashtags, visuals and timing are all optimized before publishing - nothing goes out 'as-is.'

Example - Sweet Crumb Bakery

  • Caption hook: "POV: you ordered the cake everyone's still talking about"
  • Hashtags mix broad (#customcakes) + local (#[cityname]bakery) + niche (#cakedecorating)
  • Posting time set to 7:30 PM based on audience activity data

8. Track Performance

Insights are reviewed regularly to identify what's working and the strategy is refined based on real data - not guesses.

Example - Sweet Crumb Bakery

  • Reels get 3x more reach than static posts → shift content mix toward video
  • Saves on the pricing carousel spike inquiries → repost it monthly with fresh visuals
  • Weekly review of reach, saves and DMs against the 20-inquiries-per-month goal
