Fall Break (Friday, October 23)

October 22, 2015

Fall Break Tomorrow: Tomorrow, October 23, is Fall Break for Weber State and there will be no classes.

Geoscience Alumni Picnic Great Success: We had an excellent time at the Alumni Picnic at Antelope Island last Saturday! Over 40 people were present, which included alumni, their families and even a couple of current students. After the delicious, catered lunch from Goodwood BBQ, Marek Matyjasik led the group on a nice hike and discussion of the geology of Antelope Island along the Frary Peak trail. A special thanks to John Diamond (Chair of the Geosciences Advisory Council) for heading up the organization of this event!

Departmental Advising: As the schedule of classes for Spring 2016 will soon be available, you might consider touching base with your departmental advisor to discuss your course selections and overall degree progress. The advisors are listed below:

   Geology: Dr. Rick Ford

Applied Environmental Geosciences: Dr. Marek Matyjasik

Earth Science Teaching: Dr. Rick Ford

Geospatial Minor/Geomatics Certificate: Dr. Michael Hernandez

All Graduating Seniors (Spring & Summer 2016): Dr. Rick Ford

We want to help you during the registration process -- come see us!

Tracy Hall Science Center Student Campaign: The Student Campaign is a philanthropic initiative with the goal to raise money to name the student study area of the new building. With hopes to develop an attitude of philanthropy among students and future leaders, the Student Campaign invites students to give any amount to the new building. Students who donate $50.00 or more will be be recognized on a special plaque that will hang in the student study area. Graduating seniors are offered the same opportunity with a lowered giving price of $20.15 or $20.16 honoring their graduating year. Please see the two related attachments for more information.

Call for Papers: The Utah Academy of Sciences Arts & Letters invites all faculty & students members to submit papers for the 2016 annual conference, March 10, 2016, at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. The abstract deadline is February 01, 2016. For full information please see the attached flyer.

Elementary Needs Volunteer Judges for Science Fair: Riverdale Elementary's STEM Fair is in need of science students to help with judging. The event will take place December 21, from 12:30-3:00pm at Riverdale Elementary. This is a great opportunity for a student club service project. Please see the attached flyer for details and contact information.

Creating Your Resume:  WSU Career Services can guide you in creating your first resume and/or slanting your resume toward an internship opportunity or specific position. They can also role play a general job interview with you and offer you tips for the process.  We recommend that all students put together a working resume as early as their freshmen year. To get started, please contact Greg Nielsen at gnielsen@weber.edu or 801.626.6394.  Tell him the Department of Geosciences sent you!
