Google Classroom Home Screen: Create, Access & Manage classes
Create a Class
Video Tutorial
- From your web browser, navigate to classroom.google.com
- Name your class; include section and subject (optional).
- Classroom automatically creates folders to organize you!
Home Menu - Manage / Access Classes
- (2A) Rename, Delete or Archive Classes. Archiving removes class
from your home screen but still available in “Archive” Section
- (2B) Classes view and toggle between different classes
Calendar view calendar for ALL classes
- (2C) To Review “To Do” list of pending assignments to grade/review
- (2D) Classes toggle between different classes
- (2E) Archived Classes access or restore archived classes
Settings allows you to turn email notifications on/off

- (4A) Add Post to Stream - Generally used when posting announcements NOT assignments. Also can be used by students to post messages / questions for the class, provided they have posting permission (see #7 - Class Settings)
- (4B) Reuse a Post - Pull an announcement from another class, including those you have archived.

- (5A) Quick Access Menu - Access / Open Classroom Meet link, Classroom Calendar & Google Drive folder which is automatically created for your Class.
- (5B) Create - Add Content to Classwork Page
- Assignment - See next page for details - Add assignments to individual students or the whole class, include attachments/links, set due date and points value, etc.
- Quiz Assignment - Assign a quiz created in Google Forms to students. If on school-managed devices, can force “locked mode”
- Question - Post questions for quick check in. Allow students to view & respond to each other or not. Students cannot see others’ responses until they submit their own.
- Material - Post resources for students (i.e. websites, rubrics).
- Re-use Post - Pull previous posts from other classes
Post Settings
- Edit, Delete or Move an individual post. NOTE: You can edit details such as title, description and due date, but you CANNOT change sharing permissions on file attachments for a post you have already published.
Creating Assignments

- Step 1 - Enter assignment details
- Step 2 - Add links or attachments and set sharing permissions for any files attached:
- Select sharing options for Google files attached to the assignment:
- Each student will get a copy (Individual copy added to Google Drive folder for class which they can edit),
- View Only - students can only see the file
- Student can Edit - allows ALL students to edit the SAME file
- Step 3 - Update grading settings and add a topic to organize. Assign to all students (default) or individual students using the drop down menu
- Step 4 - Click Assign or use the assign drop down to schedule the post
Topics
- Click on a topic to filter what appears on Classwork page to locate posts more quickly
- Use topics to organize content. Consider organizing by “Week of” rather than subject so that the newest content is always at the top.

To Access: Click on assignment title from Classroom Page → View Assignment
- (6A) View Student Work - Click to open student work. Even if students have not “turned in” work, it can be accessed by the teacher. From here teachers can add comments
- (6B) Create - Set point value, enter total points
- (6C) Return - Click to select some or all students to return graded work. You can also return “ungraded” work. Returning work reverts ownership from teacher to student.
- (6C) Export Grades - Download grades as CSV for import into your school’s grading system

- (7A) Add Co-teacher - Co-teachers are able to assign, view and grade student work
- (7B) Guardian Email Summaries can be toggled on so that you can add parent email addresses and they can opt-in to receive email summaries (daily/weekly).
- (7C) Student/Guardian Options - Email student, guardian. Add or remove guardians.
- (7D) Student Actions - by checking the box to the left of the student name, teachers can email, remove from class or mute. Muting individual students means they can view and submit assignments, but not post in the stream.
