Municipal Partners

City of Gloucester* from Mayor Romeo-Theken

The Office of the Mayor is the municipal partner for both Gloucester districts: Rocky Neck and Downtown.

Spring is finally here and Gloucester has plenty of fun ahead throughout the season and leading into warmer days! From returning concert series, to poetry readings, to plays, to new gallery openings, our community continues to celebrate exciting events and happenings! Additionally, our boards and commissions have been working on numerous projects and grant awards which will help continue our heritage and beauty in Gloucester. As always, our team welcomes insights or assistance so come by and visit me or our staff in the Mayor's office anytime!

Warm Regards,

Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken

City Councilors* from Joe Ciolino

The City Council is actively involved throughout Gloucester and of course several downtown projects are always in process. The City Council works with the administration and on behalf of residents and with many committees and commissions that involve arts and culture programming projects.

City Council current agenda:

  • Preparing to work on the 2017-18 budget
  • The Fuller project will be coming to council soon.
  •  Looking forward to the opening of the Stage Fort Park side of the boulevard after its multi-million dollar rebuild.
  •  Approved 5 million for the repair the Gloucester High School roofs
  • Approved spending on the rebuild of the Haskell Reservoir spillway
  •  Rebuilding the Tourist Commissions after it was disbanded
  •  Approving the 2017 59th Sidewalk Bazaar and the 2017 Block Parties
  •  Approving summer concerts on the Boulevard and Stage Fort Park

The above is just a quick overview as to what the City Council has been working on.

Downtown Development Commission*

The downtown development commission is going through a reorganization at this time.

Committee for the Arts* After serving Mayors Kirk and Romeo-Theken, Catherine Ryan has stepped down as the Mayor’s Representative on the Committee for the Arts. She remains a committee member.  Great news: Christopher Sicuranza is the new Mayor’s Representative which displays strong support for the arts at the highest administration level through the office of the Mayor.

Gloucester HarborWalk* migrating the website content, path cleared in winter, watering, and downtown WiFi continue to be strong feedback comments. The map with the circle landmarks is Beauport Hotel’s front desk hand out choice for guests.

Historical Commission* from Mary Ellen Lepionka

The Gloucester Historical Commission (GHC) has received a CPA grant for an architectural assessment of the old Town Hall (Legion Post #3) prefatory to applying for an MPPF (Massachusetts Preservation Planning Fund) grant to repair and repaint the building. The Historical Commission has also received an FY2017 Survey and Planning grant from Mass. Historical Commission for an archaeological survey of Dogtown, to include both Gloucester and Rockport. The survey will define Dogtown for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The Mass. Historical Commission is also nominating Rocky Neck to the National Register. In addition, through an FY2016 Survey and Planning grant, underway, more than 300 Gloucester properties are being added to MACRIS, the state's database of historically significant structures and neighborhoods. The Historical Commission hopes everyone will attend the 2017 Preservation Awards ceremony and slide show on Saturday, May 6, 2 to 4 PM at the Cape Ann Museum. Award certificates will be presented to 12 recipients in the categories of Restoration and Rehabilitation, Adaptive Reuse, Lifetime Achievement, Local Preservationist, Stewardship, Education and Outreach, and the Preservation of Gloucester's History.

Gloucester Local Cultural Council *

City Hall Restoration Committee* from Maggie Rosa

City Hall Restoration Commission continues to promote the restoration of City Hall. Tours of the building take place occasionally. As per the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (MAAB) two on-site parking spaces will be created at City Hall. When the parking spaces have been created landscape and beautification of the area will begin.

A photograph of City Hall was chosen for the cover page of the Mass Historical Commission's 2017 application for Preservation Awards.

Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library* from Dir. Deborah Kelsey

The library is working with the Cape Ann Museum on a Thoreau Celebration. The Cape Ann Reads project, a regional collaboration between many cultural entities and led by the 4 public libraries of Cape Ann, is into its second year. A locally created picture book was selected for publication. Stay tuned for a Cape Ann Reads trophy ceremony, receptions, public story times-book readings, and group exhibitions. APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH, look for: The annual Poetry without Paper annual competition; a presentation with Gloucester's Poet Laureate John Ronan on April 8 at 2pm and his new book of poetry; and national poem in pocket day on April 27, 2017.

CAPTAIN ELIAS DAVIS HOUSE WALLPAPER PROJECT

The Museum’s Captain Elias Davis House (1804) is getting a long anticipated facelift in the form of new historically appropriate wallpaper for four of its first floor rooms, made possible through the generosity of the women who attended the Museum’s 2016 Women’s Luncheon. The House will be closed to the public from March 23 through April 15 for preparation and papering. Find out more here: http://www.capeannmuseum.org/davis-house-wallpaper-project/ VIRGINIA LEE

BURTON EXHIBIT IN JAPAN

A selection of items from the Museum's Folly Cove Designers collection related to Virginia Lee Burton's Little House book will be going on exhibit at Gallery A4 in Tokyo this summer. The gallery has planned to create a small-scale replica of the "Little House" and it is hoped that this model will find its way back to the Museum at the end of the exhibit.

**NEWS**AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF MUSEUMS ACCREDITATION

The Cape Ann Museum has begun the process of becoming accredited by the AAM (American Alliance of Museums). The lengthy process includes a self-assessment, a review of core documents and a peer review. Each activity supports, motivates and recognizes the Cape Ann Museum’s ongoing commitment to professionalism, standards and best practices. Benefits of accreditation will assure that we operate at the highest standards, with a professional staff, board of directors and volunteers; that we are sound stewards of our collections; that we are worthy of public trust and support; that we are a strong asset for our communities; and that we are distinguished among our peers.

EXHIBITIONS

Following this winter's widely acclaimed exhibitions - Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams Instrument Maker and Kodachrome Memory: Nathan Benn's North Shore 1978 - we are pleased to announce our exhibitions through winter 2018.

  • Currently on view, through May 21, are paintings by Charles Movalli (1945-2016). Movalli was a pillar of Cape Ann’s year-round art community for over 40 years -- a distinguished landscape and marine painter, a prolific writer and advocate for the arts, and a widely respected teacher. Charles Movalli: Cape Ann & Beyond is drawn from private collections throughout the region and is complemented by gallery talks and discussions exploring Movalli’s career and influence. Find out more here. http://www.capeannmuseum.org/exhibitions/charles-movalli-cape-ann-beyond/

  • Opening on June 3 at the Cape Ann Museum will be Cape Ann Collects (working title), a wide ranging exhibition of works from area collections. A groundbreaking exhibit of Fitz Henry Lane's lithographs - Drawn from Nature and from Stone - is scheduled for the fall and will be accompanied by a two-day symposium - stay tuned for more!

  • And, in March 2018 comes Unfolding Histories: Cape Ann Before 1900, an exhibition of archival materials drawn from the Museum's Library & Archives, the Gloucester's City Archives and local historical societies.

Maritime Gloucester* from Tom Balf

Maritime Gloucester looks forward to the return of its campus following the two-year harbor remediation project being conducted by National Grid on its piers and wharves. The campus will be officially open on on May 1st. A totally new Sea Pocket Aquarium -- and its inhabitants -- will welcome students, members and visitors. The new aquarium triples the volume of tank volume and will allow us to maintain a much broader array of Gulf of Maine fish and other marine species. What's a Harbortown without a chance to see and learn about the species that define it!

Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church* from Jerry Ackerman

Schooner Adventure from Stefan Edick

It has been a busy offseason for the schooner Adventure, Gloucester's National Historic Landmark fishing vessel. The final phase of the restoration work for the vessel's Aft Cabin is now complete, and will be dedicated in honor of Joe and Helen Garland in early June. The project was supported by CPA grant funding and private donors, and is an important milestone in the ongoing preservation effort.

After spending the Winter alongside the Jodrey State Fish Pier, Adventure is scheduled to return to her berth at Maritime Gloucester in early May, where crew and volunteers will complete preparations for the sailing season. Adventure will begin sailing in late May with educational programs in conjunction with another historic schooner.

In June, Adventure will participate in Sail Boston 2017, an international Tall Ships event that will be the largest such festival in Boston Harbor since at least the year 2000. She has been given the honor of second position in the Parade of Sail, behind the USCG barque Eagle. The festival will run from June 17-22, and Adventure will proudly fly the flag of the City of Gloucester throughout. During the week, the vessel will be open for public deck tours, day sails, and evening receptions.

Later in June, Adventure will visit both Portland and Boothbay Harbor, Maine, for schooner festivals and celebrations, and will return to her home port on July 2nd. Regularly scheduled member and Community Sails and daytime educational programming will begin upon her return, concluding with participation in the Gloucester Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend.

Additional preparations for the 2017 season continue, including Adventure's annual Spring Membership Drive. For more information on Adventure's 2017 schedule, please visit the website at www.schooner-adventure.org.

North Shore Arts Assoc* from Linda Cote

North Shore Arts Association extends a heartfelt “thank you” to all our talented members, our loyal patrons and generous supporters. Each contributed in very special ways to make our 2016 season a resounding success. Numerous exhibitions, featuring the works of our many artists were offered free of charge for the enjoyment of the general public. Two first ever events were hosted at NSAA. The 1st Cape Ann Plein Air National Competition kicked off at NSAA (the official “home base”) with a very well attended welcoming reception. A successful community out-reach collaborative fundraising event with Ocean Alliance, helped raise funds, which made possible the pinnacle of the 2016 season – complete restoration of the NSAA waterside exterior. NSAA looks forward to May 5, 2017, as we open our doors for our 95th anniversary season.

Cape Ann TV* from Erich Archer

Gloucester Stage* from Heidi Dallin

GLOUCESTER STAGE DOWNTOWN

Gloucester Stage Company was pleased to partner with the UU Church for a concert this past 2016 summer during their highly successful outdoor summer concert series. Students from the Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop performed outside on Main Street during all 3 2016 Block Parties. At each community wide event a troupe of 10 students ranging in age from 8 to 15 years old performed new adaptations of classic fairy tales and children's stories including Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz and Little Bunny Foo Foo. The students joined by GSC's Education Staff introduced young audience members to live performance and interacted with audience members through playing theater games and creating characters with costumes.

ANNOUNCING GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY 2017 SEASON

(One World Premiere, Three New England Premieres & Two American Classics Set For 38th Gloucester Stage Season!) Gloucester Stage Company Artistic Director, Robert Walsh, recently announced the six-play lineup for Gloucester Stage’s 38th Season of professional theater in Gloucester, Massachusetts. “All of us at GSC are excited for our 2017 line-up of plays!” says Walsh. The 2017 season features a world premiere from a New England playwright, three New England premieres, the return of Academy Award-nominated actress, and Gloucester resident, Lindsay Crouse, and Elliot Norton Award winning actresses Rockport resident Nancy E. Carroll and Lynn native Paula Plum, as well as the GSC directing debut of Sam Weisman.

The 38th season lineup is:

May 19 - June 10: The Bank Job by John Kolvenbach;

June 16 -July 8: The Effect by Lucy Prebble;

July 14 - August 5: The Rainmaker by N. Richard Nash;

August 11 - September 2: Out of the Mouths of Babes by Israel Horovitz;

September 8 - September 30: Flight of the Monarch by Jim Frangione;

and October 6 - October 28: To Kill a Mockingbird from the Novel by Harper Lee; Stage adaptation by Christopher Sergel.

According to Walsh, “Jeff Zinn and I have been eager to find a John Kolvenbach play as we both love his writing. Bank Job couldn’t be more fun and I am so looking forward to directing the production to open the 38th season. The Effect is a play ripped from today’s headlines and we are thrilled to re-unite Sam Weisman (director) and Lindsay Crouse (actor) to flesh out this story of big pharma and what’s real in matters of the heart. The Rainmaker is a flat-out classic and a first time production for Gloucester Stage! Out of the Mouths of Babes won raves in New York and we are wonderfully fortunate to have Israel direct his fun and funny comedy prior to a run in the West End in London next year. Paula Plum returns to our stage in Horovitz’s play after two seasons directing. Flight of the Monarch received a glowing reception during our reading in NeverDark this year and I am so happy that Jeff will be directing this world premiere by our mutual friend, Jim Frangione, and featuring GSC favorite, Nancy Carroll. Rounding out the season will be another classic, new to GSC, To Kill a Mockingbird.

The 2017 season performance days and times for all productions are Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm.

  •  Single Ticket prices are $32 to $42
  • Discounts available for Preview Performances, Senior Citizens and Patrons 25 years old and under.
  •  Gloucester Stage Flex Passes for the 2017 Season are also on sale now.

For information about Gloucester Stage, or to purchase single tickets or Flex Passes, call the Box Office at 978-281-4433 or visit www.gloucesterstage.com.

sailGHS from Rob Bent, Sarah Smith, and Hilary Frye

 The Gloucester high sailing team, known as SailGHS, is getting ready to begin its spring sailing season. They'll be building off of a very successful 2016 season that saw them going undefeated in the regular season. Team racing (3 vs 3) against established local programs like Landmark, Manchester, Beverly, Swampscott, Pingree and Concord, SailGHS managed to win every match and advance to their first ever postseason. It was a short post season, as they lost to Boston Latin in a match that was so close, it had to be decided by judges. Despite the loss, SailGHS proudly finished third overall in their division in 2016. 2017 season will see many of the same racers returning. The team is hoping to continue its successful chemistry under new coach, Gordon Baird. Gordon joined the team last fall and has brought his signature racing expertise to SailGHS. His experience with small boat handling and mastery over local conditions make him a perfect mentor for the young team. Supporting Gordon and the team, on and off the water, is Hilary Frye. Hilary does everything for the SailGHS program, including but not limited to; raising money for new equipment, maintaining the boats, and being there every day in her volunteered chase boat to offer assistance and support. She is truly the heart behind the team.

WE WELCOME YOU

We would love to welcome anyone in the community to come watch the team practice and compete. We sail every day in Gloucester harbor, usually right in the mooring field. The state fish pier offers a great viewing point to watch the team. Practices and races begin around 4 o'clock and will begin around March 20th depending on weather/wind (even though last year we had a very memorable practice in a snowstorm!). You can find SailGHS on Facebook, and be sure to follow us to keep up with our racing results.

HELP US SPREAD THE WORD TO ARTISTS: Do you know any artists who would be interested in coming out with us to do some color action sketches? SailGHS would like have some art to supplement the photographs they post on Facebook and give more people a chance to sail!In Also since 2016 SailGHS has offered to share their FHL work space with an artist for temporary bimonthly stints.

7 Seas Whale Watch experienced a 20% increase in business in 2016, primarily from the drive market area but did include travelers from Europe as well. 7 Seas Whale Watch staff did a great job. The 2017 whale watching season begins in less than a month. On March 28th (pushed back due to weather) we hosted the 2nd Winter Bird Watching Trip with the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce. Thankfully the weather cooperated and allowed us to get out to Stellwagen Bank where we found a good number of birds - and even a few whales! Since this trip was mainly a birding trip, however, we spent most of our time watching the small groups of common murres, razorbills, gannets, guillemots, eiders, long-tailed ducks, scaup, and others. The highlight of the trip for many was a VERY close look at thick-billed murre in Gloucester Harbor.

Ken Riaf

Ken Riaf’s miniature mixed media assemblages come in weathered wooden boxes and set human figures in ironic, heroic and sometimes, comic situations. The re-imagined worlds, shaped and repurposed from throw-away objects, explore power and place, law and justice, the personal and interpersonal. The assemblages have been featured in The Boston Globe, The Peabody Essex Museum, and galleries including: Flatrocks Gallery, Side Street Gallery, Trident Gallery, Zephyr Art Gallery, and the Law & Water Gallery. Most recently they were included in a solo show at Jane Deering Gallery, Gloucester, MA, "Miniscularity: It's Better to Know Little"

MARKETING

Press: advance communication receives the most ink. Three months lead time for magazines and articles is tight.  North Shore, Cape Ann, Gloucester are rarely featured in these MOTT seasonal round-ups--even when it’s programs and events we all know are happening.  Perhaps if more people send in their information it will get picked up. Sign up to receive their industry update. Here’s the current one: 5 Things Spring

Please note: we ask that all participants call in so that they can participate in the facilitated discussion following the presentations and virtually connect with other districts and practitioners in the field.

Lastly, our thanks to everyone who attended the regional convenings held over the past month.  We found the conversations insightful, and are looking forward to gathering again for the statewide convening on Tuesday, May 16 in Hyannis.  Information regarding accommodation and agenda will be coming in the next couple of weeks.

The notes from the regional convenings are attached, as well as the attendees.  Please feel free to be in touch with any questions, and thanks to all for your dedication to creative communities in Massachusetts!
