Design Concepts Syllabus

The Purpose of this class is not to teach you how to read a script, but how to effectively analyze scripts for design purposes. We will be reading several scripts of varying types, and we will be designing the shows. We will also be utilizing production meetings to collaborate on designs for the shows.

You Will Need:

Chromebook (must be with you EVERY day)

3 ring Binder (with notebook paper)

1-3 Trifold Presentation board (can be reused for multiple projects)

Grade Breakdown:

Participation:

We will be discussing many different plays during the 12 weeks.  You are expected to keep up with the reading in order to participate in discussion.  You must be prepared for all design meetings and you must ask reasonable and insightful questions.

Reflections:

This is a heavy reading course, you will be asked to respond/reflect to all scripts

Design Meetings:

Preparedness and Participation in design Meetings (both active and passive) are a must.  These are the “Production Meetings” for our scripts).

Quizzes/R.Response

Expect to have quizzes over all homework and reading assignments and plays we read.  For every text reading assignment you will have a response to complete.

Projects & Tests:

We will be working in design teams for many shows.  The designs you present will be graded as a project, including one final group project. There will be a unit test and a final exam.

Late Work Policy

Presentations will receive at least a grade deduction for being late. The final group project will NOT be accepted late.  Schedules are pre printed with dates,  If you are sick on a presentation date it is expected you will present at 2 pm on the day you return..

Electronics Policy

Every student is expected to have a chromebook/laptop with them everyday.  These devices will be used intermittently, but can be requested at any time.  Students will be given a chromebook from the school if needed.  Cell phones during class time are not allowed.  Every D&P classroom has cell phone pockets for students to place their phones at the beginning of class.  Failure to do so will result in a referral.

Academic Integrity Policy

All assignments must be your own work.  If it is discovered you have used others' work, you will receive a zero for the assignment along with a referral.  As we will be creating designs for popular scripts, taking others ideas (other designs) and using as your own is plagiarism/stealing.  You can be influenced by an image but never use a direct copy of someone else’s design.
