ACCESSIBILITY AT XYZ HOMEWORK
The term "accessibility" refers to the idea that a product or service can be used by everyone, regardless of their abilities.
For details on how we meet applicable standards and guidelines for accessibility, please see the XYZ Homework Accessibility Conformance Report (VPAT).
This page details some of the features available in XYZ Homework for students needing accessibility accommodations.
USER SETTINGS
Accessibility and Display Preferences can be updated on the User Profile page.
- Click User Settings at the top of the screen, OR:
Click the arrow next to the profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen to open the drop-down menu, then click User Settings. - Navigate to Accessibility and Display Preferences halfway down the page.
- Adjust settings based on the recommendations below.
- Click Update Info at the bottom of the page to save changes.

Students using screen readers are recommended to use these settings:
- Math Display: MathJax 3, with screen reader support pre-enabled, which provides the best accessibility available. It can integrate with most screen readers. Depending on your previous interactions, you might still need to adjust the accessibility features of MathJax 3:
- Right-click a math expression (or tab to select it and press Space) to activate the menu.
- Navigate to Accessibility, make sure Activate is checked.
- Notes:
- If you want to use your screen reader’s built-in MathML reader instead of MathJax’s built-in generator, navigate to Accessibility, make sure Activate is unchecked, and make sure Include Hidden MathML is checked.
- You may need to experiment to determine which settings work best with your screen reader.
- Graph Display: Text alternatives - tables or charts in place of graphs, which will replace graphs with tables or other alternatives.
- Instructors can select this preference when previewing a question to view the alt text for any figures.
- If a graph or figure is created using showplot(), the software will automatically generate alt text, usually consisting of a table of x & y values. This is usually not sufficient for students to be able to answer the question. When creating or editing questions, use the replacealttext() function to create new alt text for a figure.
- Drawing Entry: Keyboard and text-based drawing entry alternative, which will allow answering of most graphing questions by selecting equation type and using keyboard entry to enter coordinates.
- Text Editor: Plain text entry, for a simpler text-entry experience, or Rich text editor with formatting buttons for more markup options.
- Math Entry: Calculator-style text entry, for a simpler expression entry experience.
- Live preview: Only show a preview when I click the Preview button. While the default will work fine, this reduces the risk of unnecessary update alerts.

Students needing to zoom the screen are recommended to use these settings:
- Math Display: MathJax 3, which will look crisp and clear even when zoomed. It also has built-in capability for showing a zoomed equation when clicked:
- Right-click a math expression (or tab to select it and press Space) to active the menu.
- Navigate to Math Settings.
- Navigate to Zoom Trigger to choose a keyboard/click sequence for zooming.
- Navigate to Zoom Factor to choose an appropriate zoom percentage.
- Graph Display: SVG in browser - highest quality, which will look crisp and clear even when zoomed.

Students using the keyboard instead of the mouse for navigation:
- Drawing Entry: Keyboard and text-based drawing entry alternative, which will allow answering of most graphing questions by selecting equation type and using keyboard entry to enter coordinates, rather than requiring careful entry with a mouse or touch device.
Students with seizures or distraction issues:
- Live preview: Only show a preview when I click the Preview button. This will disable the default automatic display of a preview while you’re typing an equation, which can be distracting. The updated area is very small, so unlikely to be a seizure risk, but this option is available if there is concern.
Students needing especially high contrast:
- Course styling and contrast: High contrast, dark on light. While all themes are designed to meet accessibility requirements, this will override the instructor-chosen theme with an especially high contrast alternative.
GRADEBOOK FEATURES
Time Limit Multiplier
The time allowed on timed assignments can be changed to accommodate student needs. This can be done from the Roster using Time Limit Multiplier.
- Go to your Roster and click on the student’s name.

- Adjust the Time Limit Multiplier to the necessary accommodation. For example, if an assignment has a time limit of 60 minutes, adjusting the multiplier to 1.5 would give that student 90 minutes.

- Click Update Info at the bottom of the page to save changes.
