Budapest, 25th April 1935

My dear good Friend,

Your letter gave me great pleasure and I am hurrying to answer it, first and foremost in order to send you our good wishes on the occasion of your 66th birthday. May God bring you many happy returns of the day, in good health and keen energy for work, so that you may bestow new paintings on the world.

Hopefully at some point in the near future you will visit Budapest again, perhaps for an extended period, so that we will have a chance to see each other more. – It is now six years since we were in London. How time flies! Sadly that London visit was so short – we were only in London for five days in all – that the whole thing now seems like a beautiful dream to me.

Otherwise we – thank God – are managing to get by somehow in these difficult times. The economic situation is very slow to improve, but until things change and get better,

times will be hard for the arts.

My eldest son qualified last year. He now has his architect’s certificate and would very much like to find a job but that is the most difficult thing of all nowadays. – My younger son is studying with us at the College of Fine Arts. He gets his Teacher of Drawing diploma next year. He is a talented boy; particularly interested in portraiture. He – alongside my wife and I – is a great admirer of yours. –

I must now close what has been rather a short letter. Once again, my very best wishes and kind regards from both of us.

Kedves jó Barátom!

Nagy örömet szereztél kedves soraiddal és én sietek azokra válaszolni, mindenekelőtt azért, hogy kifejezzem jó kívánatainkat 66-ik születésnapod alkalmából. Adja isten, hogy még sokszor meg érezhesd ezt a napot jó egészségben, friss munkakedvben, hogy még sok szép újabb alkotásoddal ajándékozhasd meg a világot.

Remélhetőleg egyszer a közel jövőben ismét ellátogatsz Budapestre, talán hosszabb időre, amikor majd lesz alkalmunk újból találkozni. – Bizony már hat éve annak, hogy mi Londonban voltunk, hogy múlik az idő! Sajnos az az angliai kirándulásunk oly rövid ideig tartott – összesen öt napot töltöttünk csak Londonban – hogy az egész úgy tűnik föl előttem, mint egy szép álom.

Máskülönben mi – hál’Istennek – megvagyunk valahogy ezekben a nehéz időkben. A gazdasági viszonyok nagyon nehezen javulnak, pedig amíg ezek nem változnak, illetve jobbra nem fordulnak, addig

a művészetekre mostoha idők járnak.

Nagyobbik fiam múlt évben szerezte meg a diplomáját. Most okleveles építész; nagyon szeretne valami állásba jutni, de ez a legnehezebb dolog manapság. – Kisebbik fiam oda jár hozzánk a képzőművészeti főiskolára. Jövő évben fogja megkapni a rajztanári oklevelét. Tehetséges gyerek; különösen az arckép érdekli, nagy tisztelője ő is – velünk, feleségemmel együtt – a Te művészetednek. –

De most zárom, ezúttal rövidre szabott levelem. Még egyszer minden jót kívánva, mindkettőnk szíves üdvözleteivel maradok

Aladár Edvi Illés (1870–1958), Hungarian painter and graphic artist; trained at the Mintarajziskola in Budapest and at the Académie Julian in Paris (1893–1895), and later as an aquarellist in London. Won numerous prizes and has a number of works in the Hungarian National Gallery.
