The Ocean Floor – Chapter 3 Section 2

  1.  continental shelf – gently sloping section of the continental margin located between the shore and continental slope

  1.  continental slope – the steeply inclined section of the continental margin located between the continental shelf and the bottom of the ocean floor

  1. abyssal plain – large, flat, almost level area of the deep ocean floor

  1. mid-ocean ridge – undersea chain of mountains – creates plate boundaries – site of sea-floor spreading

  1. rift valley – long narrow valley that forms as tectonic plates separate – found at mid-ocean ridge

  1. seamount – submerged mountain on the ocean floor that is at least 1000 m high and has a volcanic origin

  1. ocean trench – a long, steep depression in the deep sea floor that is usually found next to a chain of volcanic islands or a continental margin
