[1] De László painted Lord Joicey’s daughter Marguerite in 1916 [112637] and 1917 [5907]. The earlier, smaller portrait was rejected in favour of the latter, which was completed in September 1917 [5907]. Marguerite Joicey had died suddenly in April 1924 and another portrait of her would have brought some comfort to her father, who had already lost a wife and two sons. De László must have refused the request as the earlier composition [112637] remained rolled in his studio until his death, when it was destroyed with other pictures considered by his executors as unworthy of his reputation.
