4.NF.1 and 4.NF.2 Pathway Sample Teaching Schedule

Group 1

(Needs instruction on 4.NF.1 and 4.NF.2)

Group 2

(Does not exist at the beginning of the unit, but is created if needed for students in group 1 who need to speed up or group 3 who need to slow down.)

Group 3

(Does not need instruction for 4.NF.1, but does for 4.NF.2)

Group 4

(Needs instruction on neither 4.NF.1 nor 4.NF.2)

Day 1

4.NF.1 Lesson 1: Teach finding equivalents visually, using manipulatives and pictures.

Students work independently on constructed response tasks from the pathway, moving to the extension activity when finished (if time permits).

Day 2

4.NF.1 Lesson 2: Teach finding equivalents by multiplying/dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Just a few students from the 4.NF.1 group are ready to move on. They play math games reviewing skills and/or work on Khan Academy or other resources you have available for them.

Day 3

4.NF.1 Lesson 2: Reteach

A large enough number of students are ready to move on to justify another group.

4.NF.1 Lesson 3: Teach students to identify simplest form and reduce a fraction to simplest form.

4.NF.2 Lesson 1: Teach students to visually compare fractions to ½ using manipulatives and pictures.

Students work independently on constructed response tasks from the pathway, moving to the extension activity when finished (if time permits).

Day 4

4.NF.1 Lesson 3: Teach students to identify simplest form and reduce a fraction to simplest form.

4.NF.1 Lesson 3: Reteach

(Students who show mastery work on review games or Khan Academy.)

4.NF.2 Lesson 2: Teach students to compare fractions to ½ by creating equivalent fractions, checking their work with manipulatives and pictures.

Students work independently on constructed response tasks from the pathway, moving to the extension activity when finished (if time permits).

Day 5

4.NF.1 Lesson 3: Reteach

(Students who show mastery work on review games or Khan Academy.)

4.NF.1 Constructed Response Tasks

4.NF.2 Lesson 3: Teach students to compare fractions by creating equivalent fractions and using the butterfly method as a shortcut.

Students work independently on constructed response tasks from the pathway, moving to the extension activity when finished (if time permits).

Day 6

4.NF.1 Constructed Response Tasks

(Anyone not finished with the constructed response tasks can move to group 1) 4.NF.2 Lesson 1: Teach students to visually compare fractions to ½ using manipulatives and pictures.

4.NF.2 Constructed Response Tasks

Students work independently on constructed response tasks from the pathway, moving to the extension activity when finished (if time permits).
