Starting off with the Forfeiture Orders:

Notice of Apparent Liability

Notice Of Unlicensed Operation

Lets call this nest one another “rumor” but I do trust the source.

On April 15th, the FCC conducted a "raid" on the studios of LPFM station in texas. All The Broadcasting equipment was seized. Including the FCC Compliant transmitters. the station was ordered to cease and desist all transmissions.

Andrew Yoder posts asking If anyone (listeners or stations) would send any eQSLs or scans from these stations operating in  2012  for his upcoming Pirate Radio Annual

HF Underground

The big post of the week was from Radio Ronin posting to set things straight about the FCC action against his station we touched on earlier. He wanted to say how much he appriciated all the support from the community and to emphasise that he has NO indication or information that would lead him to believe that any op dropped a dime on him”.  He goes on to say that he has few regrets and really liked what he did and how he did it. If that exposed him more to our federal friends so be it! I have always believed that it is important to live life big as doing otherwise was like not living at all. His intention is to continue to participate in the community in several capacities as he has done in the past.

There is a parallel thread on the HFU about the bust with a couple good nuggets of information. DIYMedia notes that years ago on the FRN the poster named "Top Cop"  was Richard Lee, then-chief of the FCC's Compliance and Information Bureau.  John goes on to note that - The FCC does surf the 'net looking for pirate info, but rarely do they use it to start a case (more for supplemental information).

And John poet chimes in with his thoughts on the matter stating that The FCC does do "routine monitoring" of licensed stations from time to time-- and I'm sure they try to dovetail this in when they have agents in an area on other agency business, having limited resources. So the FCC has a lot of other uses for those DF vehicles, besides hunting pirate stations.... but if you go on the air with one of those around, they'll definitely know it, and start to DF the station, since they can. In such a case, it will happen because they happened upon it-- not because there's been any specific "complaint".  That seems to have been what happened here: indeed, an "accidental bust".

Also on the HFU this week ChrisSmolinski posts that the HFUnderground now has a Teamspeak 3 server. This can be used to share and listen to streaming audio. He describes how to set it up which is fairly simple and you can join the group and either stream you radio or just listen. I was on for a while on saturday. good audio with no lag.

a follow up on beerus’s thread last weeks about interference from a nearby broadcast station. Chris Lobdell suggested a Par Electronics Hi Pass Filter in a little aluminum box, called "Broadcast Eliminate - Hi Pass Filter" part #BCST-HPF. Using that it eliminated his problems

‭Closing

The last couple weeks has seen activity significantly reduced. Whenever there is an enforcement action against a HF free radio station it has a chilling effect across the hobby. Which is probably the intent of the Bureau.

This last week I took a look at the enforcement logs to try to get a better feel on the enforcement effort of the FCC against shortwave pirates. Theses a blog post on sans contemplation with the data a and a chart but it boils down to this. In 1998 there was a big bust with three stations getting the knock. and another fell in 200, then you have to go all the way till 2007 till the FCC took action against a pirate. then activity went p. two stations in 2010, 2 stations in 2011 then the action against Ronin earlier this month.  Its not an all out effort by the FCC to rid the shortwave airwaves of pirate activity. But it does seem like a sustained , albeit low intensity effort has arisen in the bureau to take action against free radio on the short waves. OPerators may want to keep that in mind.

May be no show next week unless there is a bunch of news and pirate activity.

What did we learn this week?
