Describe common characteristics of woodlands.

Why are trees important to the animals and to us?

  1. The the story “A Tree for Me”
  2. Ask the children: What animals live in the tree? Why are trees important to the animals and to us? What would happen if we cut down the trees?
  3. Display pictures of woodlands.
  4. Have the children describe what they see.
  5. Have a child stand with his or her arms outstretched. Identify the child as a tree.
  6. Have the rest of the class stand and stretch out their arms to be trees.
  7. Explain that each of them alone is a tree, but together they are woodlands.
  8. Talk about animals that live in the woodland. (rabbits, bear, fox, owls, raccoons, squirrels, and deers.
  9. Discuss why these woods are so important to these animals.
  10. Ask: What would you do to protect these animals?
