Welcome to the OAES Music Classroom!

In the music classroom, children explore music through the Orff Schulwerk (Orff for short) style of music education.  This method is based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance, and keep a beat on instruments. The students use these as a means for learning music by imitating and creating, followed by reading and writing—much the same way we all learned our own language.

It is my goal to teach children more than just music - we practice real life skills in my classroom: kindness, responsibility, integrity, teamwork, leadership, perseverance and respect are just a few of the traits we work on each week in the music classroom.

On this website, you can explore information about what your child is doing in music class, details about our activities, news about chorus, and general photos from each grade!

About Mrs. Sumner

Bio pic HS

My name is Heather Sumner and I am the music teacher at Ocean Avenue School.  I have been teaching general music and band since 2003.  I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and a Master’s degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Knoxville Tennessee. Throughout my career, I had a variety of music teaching and performing experiences in addition to general music.  I taught private clarinet lessons, led percussion ensembles, and performed in a variety of orchestras, chamber groups and choirs around the world. Outside of the classroom, I spend as much time outdoors as my family will allow. I enjoy performing music with friends, cooking, hiking, reading, and gardening. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the music curriculum at OAS!
