Petfinder Screencast Script

  1. Hey there everyone! This is Caroline, and I’m going to show you how to find an adoptable pet on Petfinder.com. It’s a pretty easy site to navigate, and I’ll be showing you some of the other features as well.
  2. Before you start, make sure you have your computer ready, your Wi-Fi is up and running, and you have a working browser.
  3. Once all of that is done, open up your browser and type in www.petfinder.com, which will bring you to the Petfinder website.
  4. As you can see, the site has several different parts. Here are some featured articles you can check out, and if you scroll down you’ll find more articles, as well as events, videos, and how to add a link to petfinder on your own website. Up top is the menu, which has lots of resources: information on adoption, dog care, cat care, all pet care (which includes barnyard animals, birds, rabbits, and small & furry pets- so hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, mice, rats…), shelters and rescue (which has shelters you can adopt from, how to start your own shelter, information on volunteering and fostering…), others ways you can help the animals, and some cool videos to watch.
  5. What we’re specifically going to focus on is this section here, the main purpose of this site- “find a pet to adopt”. It’s super easy, and it’s already laid out for you right when you first enter the site.
  6. So let’s say I’m looking for a dog. First, I type in my location (I live in Verona, so I would type in Verona, NJ, although I could have typed in my zipcode too), type of animal (dog), breed (let’s pick labrador retriever), age (for this one you can check multiple boxes. As much as I love puppies, I just don’t have the time to train and housebreak one, so I’ll check off “young” and “adult”), and finally gender (you can check multiple boxes for this one as well. For now we’ll say any gender is fine).
  7. Once you have all of the sections filled out, click the “find pets” button.
  8. So far this site has found [number] adoptable dogs in my area. Wow! But let’s narrow it down even more. Up here is the additional search option, which pops right up just like the basic search. For distance, I’ll pick within 100 miles. I want a dog that’s house trained, I’m fine with any size, and my household has cats- two of them- so I need a dog that likes cats, or at least one that can live with them!
  9. Now the search has narrowed down to ___ adoptable dogs in my area. Look how cute they all are! I want them all! Make sure you look through all of the pages until you find a dog you like. [pick a dog] Once you find one that you’re interested in, click their picture.
  10. This will take you to their page, which the shelter that they’re from has set up for them. You can find more pictures of the dog, all of their basic information, a link to their shelter (this is very important!), and a bio so you can find out about their personality and background. If you look through all of their information and decide that yes, this is the dog for you, there are two options.
  11. The first option is to click the “adopt me” button. The cool thing about Petfinder is that not only can you find a pet, you can also connect to the shelter and start the adoption process through Petfinder as well. To do this, you need to make an account, but it’s very easy- just fill out the information, click register, and you’ll be able to get the ball rolling!
  12. The second option is to skip this step and go straight to the shelter. My family used Petfinder to find both of our cats, and we did it this way. We drove to the shelter and were basically able to adopt our cats on the spot. However, it doesn’t always work out this way, and if you’re not sure when you’ll be able to get over to the shelter, you should definitely contact them first and let them know which pet you’re interested in. Otherwise, someone else might swoop in, especially if you’re adopting a kitten or a puppy- these are the most popular and most desirable animals.
  13. So that’s Petfinder! I would definitely encourage you to use Petfinder to adopt a pet, it’s the easiest way to find your perfect pet, and adopting in general is much more beneficial to both you and the animals. There are thousands of animals out there waiting to be adopted. With Petfinder, you can find the perfect pet and give one of these animals its forever home.
  14. Thank you for watching, and good luck!
