January 2017 Pre-course Accept - Syllabus

Preparing for class / pre-work:

Before the first day of class it is required that you complete the precourse work up until Underbar I. This section is mostly reading, so we're asking you to complete it before class so you can spend most of the class hours coding. The specific sections you need to cover are:

• Introduction and Using Precourse
• Prerequisite Studies: Basic Javascript, CSS and HTML
• Our Work Development: Git and the Command Line
• Introduction to Automated Testing
• Advanced Javascript I: Debugging

Pre-course access: 

All Locations - Precourse will be accessed through Makerpass LearnTo. This version of Pre-course will have regular checkpoints to help you gauge your comprehension of the material. These results will not be collected, and will not influence your admission into the immersive program.

Correction: No students will be using Bookstrap. An earlier version of this doc mistakenly stated Remote students would use Bookstrap.

Daily Agenda

D1, Mon 1/16, 3hr (Solo):

        Before Class:

                Tech Check:

• Update your GitHub (Name, Gmail, & Picture)
• Sign Up for Floobits (Sign-Up with GitHub)
• Sign Up for Zoom (Sign-Up with Google)
• Setup your git config file (Name and email should match GitHub account)
• Update your User Preferences in Sublime to prevent headaches in the future and keep your code looking clean. Navigate to ‘Preferences’ then ‘User - Settings’. Add the below settings to the object and save the file:{    “tab_size”: 2,    “translate_tabs_to_spaces”: true,    “word_wrap”: true,    “trim_trailing_white_space_on_save”: true }

                Communication Check: Slack, Zoom

6:00 to 7:00pm, Lecture: Introduction to Precourse Accept

7:00 to 9:00pm, Finish Pre-Work & start Underbar I:

• Go through Chrome Developer Tools tutorial
• Finish the Check Points at the end of the Debugging section.
• Start building the first part of the Underbar library. _.identity() to _.reduce().

D2 Tues 1/17, 3hr (Solo):

        6:00pm to 7:00pm, Lecture: Problem Solving Best Practices.

        7:00pm to 9:00pm, Underbar I:

• Continue working through Underbar I
• If you’re done, go back and refactor _.map and _.filter using _.reduce.
• If you’ve refactored, move on to the slides that will help you prep for for Underbar II

D3 Wed 1/18, 3 hr (Solo):

6:00pm to 9:00pm,  Finish Underbar I and start Prep for Underbar II Scopes & Closures:

• Read through documentation for Underbar II

• Scopes Slides.
• Execution Contexts.
• Contexts v.s. Objects.
• Closures.

• Please submit any questions you have from the Underbar II slides here.
• Finish the Check Points for the section.

D4 Thurs 1/19, 3hr (Solo/Pairs):

        6:00pm to 9:00pm, finish prep for Underbar II Scopes & Closures:

• Read through documentation for Underbar II

• Scopes Slides.
• Execution Contexts.
• Contexts v.s. Objects.
• Closures.

10:00am to 10:30am, Town Hall: Underbar II Town Hall

Please submit any questions you have from the Underbar II slides here.

10:30am to 11:00am, Floobits + Pairing tutorial: Your tech mentors will take you through floobits and explain our pairing philosophy. You will then be paired off for Underbar II.

11:00am to 12:30pm, start Underbar II: Coding.

12:30pm to 1:30pm: Lunch

1:30pm to 4:30pm: Coding

        4:30 to 5:00pm: Snack Break

        5:00pm to 7:00pm: Coding

D6 Sunday 1/22, 7 hrs (Pairs):

        10am to 7pm, Underbar II:

• Complete Underbar II.
• If you finish Underbar II early, refactor your code by replacing imperatively written code with underbar functions that achieve the same functionality.
• If you accomplish the challenge above, go through the extra credit.

D7 Monday 1/23, 3 hrs (Solo):

        6:00pm to 9:00pm, Prep for Twittler:

• CSS cross country
• Try JQuery

D8 Tuesday 1/24, 3hrs (Solo):

6:00pm to 9:00pm, Prep for Twittler:

• CSS Cross Country
• Try JQuery
• Finish CheckPoint

• Build Twittler with a partner.

Thursday 1/26 & Friday, 1/27 Readiness Assessments:

Our tech mentors will conduct a 30 minute readiness assessment to determine whether you’re ready for the upcoming cohort. All results are final. Please consult this FAQ if you have any questions regard the readiness assessment.
