CORGAK
Corgak is a rigger, you might call him the cavalry or the guy who gets your ass out of Dodge when all hell breaks loose. The story of Corgak begins with a young Dwarf named Bjønne Andersen. Little B (a nickname his father created) was a tinkerer from the start, as a young Dwarf he often would take apart all the electrical do-hickeys, much to the chagrin of his parents, because it was fun and the little parts captivated his mind. His parents tried very hard to be upstanding world citizens, but time are tough for those who lack citizenship and this family of dwarves was no exception. His father idolized the people (almost always a Human or sometimes an Elf) who were "lucky" enough to be able to hold a corporate job. This is the seed of what would ultimately culminate into a deep seated hatred for what much of the shadows refer to as "wage slaves". To hear Corgak speak of it, you would get a lecture on people who sacrifice their lives and their families to the sole benefit of the myriad of corporations, the same corporations which would not even give a single drek about the people who slave away to support them. He was born and raised on the outskirts of the Barrens, as far away from it as his family could afford. Sadly, during Corgak's late adolescence / early adulthood, a gang moved in and his father refused to pay protection money; he believed that the system would take care of the gangs. So as a young adult, Bjønne found himself on his own with no family to fall back upon; his mother committed suicide not long after his father was made into an example for the rest of the neighborhood. Seeing all the failures of his father and where they led him, he decided he would not follow suit and embraced the shadows, for the most part.
After the violent removal of family, but before taking the full plunge as a shadowrunner, Bjønne made attempts at “legitimate” work. Bjønne finally decided he would pursue his passion and apprenticed at a local garage; here he was taught how to maintain cars and quickly elevated to a Senior Tech, but he was never quite happy with this life, it reminded him of his father; whom he still loathed. He used his savings to enroll in online community college courses, where he learned how drones work, both mechanically and electronically.
Now, we get to the story of how Bjønne becomes Corgak. With his education in drones more or less complete, Bjønne has of course learned that merely controlling drones via console or AR is just the tip of the iceburg. To really get the full experience, he has to jump off into the deep end. Cybersurgery. We all know that Cyberware is pricey and that the install is even pricier; this was completely out of Bjønne’s budget, but Little B, or “<C4pt41n C0nd0r>” as he called himself on the BBS systems of 2065, wasn’t going to let something like that stop him. He borrowed the moniker from a sunday morning Tridtoon about a Robin Hood sort named “Captain Condor”, who commanded robotic birds to cause wanton mayhem and bring ruination to the local corporation (modeled after a competing corp to the parent company of the Tridtoon producer). Sorry for the diversion, but Captain Condor was a very influential part of his upbringing. <C4pt41n C0nd0r> befriended a rather competant decker through the Matrix, by the handle of <Zoner Crash> or ZC for shorthand, it is much easier for him to make friends when things like real life interaction cannot get into the way. After awhile, ZC offered Condor a hookup for getting the cyber and the surgery to be able to “jump” into his drones, for a favor; by this point Bjønne owned a couple of small, innocuous enough drones that he used to spy on neighbors or go on grand adventures. His favorite was watching the girl in the apartment a few doors down take johns for hits of bliss. He would pick up some extra nuyen for uploading the recorded video on the matrix. This favor was that he was to sit in a van that ZC and a couple buddies were going to be in, while they went to liberate some sort of state of the art software package from Fragwad, Inc. (this is what Bjønne referred to most corps as), and then drive off after they got back. Condor helps them with the run, ZC will hook him up with the Control Rig cyberware. Thankfully, he took ZC’s advice about dropping the “Captain” part of <C4pt41n C0nd0r> before meeting the rest of the team. As far as Bjønne knew, the run went without a hitch, although he did wonder if he smelled explosive residue on some of the guys who were loaded to the gills with guns, after they returned. As a kid, Bjønne never said he wanted to be a shadowrunner when he grew up, but at 22 years old he participated in his first run and he realized, at that moment, what he really wanted to do with his life.
Fast forward to November of 2074. Condor and team he ran with were on the mission to end all missions. That should have been red flag #1. One million nuyen to snag a nano-processor engineer from a Fairlight subsidiary for Mr. Johnson. The team in its current configuration had been working together for about 2 years and had successfully completed 12 runs in that time. However, for this mission they were going to be down ZC; supposedly his deck got bricked on the last run by a team of deckers working for their mark and he was waiting for his new one to arrive. It was not going to arrive before the run started is the story they all got, so they hired a fill in. The run was going like how most runs go; they were on plan B by the time they arrived at the objective. That is when EVERYTHING went to drek. Almost immediately the the facility went into lockdown and a Knight Errant HTR team arrived on scene. Condor had a one four-letter word vocabularly at this particular moment, particularly after he lost control of all of his drones and the van started to drive off on its own. Realizing what was probably going to happen to him, Condor shot out the windows to the van and escaped. Worse for the wear, and blind from the lack of drones. Condor had no choice but to leave. Later, footage would show his drones gunning down the rest of his team and the wage slave engineer. This reeked of being hired to die by Mr. Johnson so that the corporation could retire the engineer and skimp on benefits. The HTR team was presumably a back up in case plan A failed, which Corgak presumes was geeking the decker (or maybe the decker was in on it, he was not part of the team after all). Unfortunately, the shadows are unforgiving and Condor was bad news and suddenly persona non grata, so Condor gave way to Corgak. Corgak was a random assortment of characters after “smashing” the AR keyboard. “That’ll do for now, at least its not leperous, like Condor.” So far, Corgak has had no success in finding ZC or even finding any references to him and runners still give him a wide berth, both figuratively and literally, despite dropping the Condor persona. Corgak has lots of questions that currently do not have answers. Well, there is one answer, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it an answer though: Alcohol. Corgak spends most evenings drinking cheap beer at a hole in the wall bar that is rarely visited by runners, he’s less likely to get into an altercation that way. While the bartender isn’t particularly friendly, sometimes no words are the right words; besides, she keeps his glass full. Her name is Bethany, she’s an Ork that could probably make some decent nuyen making pornographic trids. Corgak always chuckles when the young gun Orks and Trolls come in and try to pick her up; she obviously has a hell of a right hook.
Fortunately for Corgak, he was able to salvage a couple of his fragged group’s contacts. John Blythe, a “too old for this drek” Elf, was one of their more reliable fixers who sometimes is in need of a rigger. Another is Ann Westermarch, a German human who could make hot contraband disappear and would sometimes have some fun toys. The only other contact that was willing to speak to him is a black market contact who goes by the name of “Phoenix”, Phoenix is a man(?) of presumably Japanese descent from his facial features and accent, if those are actually orignal at all. Phoenix is mostly chrome, but deals in black market vehicles and drones; whether its illegal parts all the way to the whole enchilada.
