Course Description

The overall purpose of the Arts program at Island Pacific School is to develop students' interest and confidence in their ability to do art. To achieve these aims, we will be exploring not only the visual arts but also musical and dramatic aspects of our artistic world. Some of the skills we will cover over the year will include a variety of visual mediums, singing, rhythm making, and presentation. Students completing this course should develop a greater understanding and appreciation for the arts. They should be challenged to consider authentic issues and develop their skills beyond superficiality and imitation.

The aims of MYP arts are to encourage and enable students to:


The following units will be covered over the course of the year.

Unit 1:  Visual Art: Students will be introduced to the basic elements of visual art and get an introduction to various famous artists through a number of short in class projects. They will be using the techniques and experiences they develop in these short projects to create a personal creative project to be displayed in the school Art & Design Expo.

Unit 2:  Drama: Students will be introduced to the basics of theatre and the world of   improvisation through a variety of dramatic exercises and games. These games are designed to build student's confidence, cooperation, and presentation skills while being challenging and fun.

Unit 3:  Music: Students will use their intrinsic instruments of voice and body to explore the basics of rhythm and singing. Through games, jams, and the learning of songs, students will develop their musical skill and confidence, thus preparing them for further growth in music.

Resources & Materials

Students will be expected to have an 8½ x 11 developmental workbook (sketch book).
