My dear Friend,

A year and a half ago, I received an invitation from Sárkány,^[1] a member of our younger cohort of painters, to a meeting where the setting up of a “Hungarian Portrait Painters Group” was to be discussed. Among those present were a significant number of genre and landscape artists, and there were numerous absences among the ranks of painters specialising in portraiture but this was only the first meeting and there was enough of a quorum for it to be agreed that such a group should be set up. Our colleague Balló^[2] was unanimously elected President, X.Y.Z. was chosen to be Secretary, etc., – and it was decided that Fülöp László would be offered the post of honorary President. – Because this took place in the middle of the summer, – the next meeting, where everything would be discussed in more detail, was tabled for early autumn. One fine morning, as autumn approached, what do I read in the papers but that the “Hungarian Portrait Painters Group” has been formed. Names, names – my own name nowhere to be seen, it appeared that I had not been invited to this second meeting. I contacted Balló to ask for an explanation...... Oh well, you see, the fact of the matter is, that the hot-blooded younger generation all clubbed together and voted you and other older, worthy artists like you, out of the race,

you don’t belong! But this is absurd; worse than absurd, it is positively unscrupulous behaviour!!!

He agreed with me, as you will see from the letter he sent me, which I enclose with this. He tried to shush me, telling me I shouldn’t take it so seriously, said why didn’t I just send in a few of my paintings to the exhibition they were about to open, send them directly to him, at his studio, and that he would use his President’s privilege to have them accepted. Naturally that kind of humiliating creeping in through a side door is an insult to my name, the very idea of it makes me shudder. I put the whole thing from my mind and gave it no further thought for 1½ years, until recently, in one of the papers, tucked away and in tiny print, I spotted the news of this impending exhibition. I don’t know if you know anything about the structure of the Szinnyei [sic] Society here, but I can describe it in a few words: a handful of artists get together, diplomatically combine forces and create a group, the chief factor being a subtle and discreet manipulation of the press with the result that they become fixed in the minds of the public and of society as the true and only trustworthy and established Hungarian artists, – anyone outside the group is trash, artistic dregs!.... This is their tactic, the Szinnyei name gives them respectability, – so along come

a couple of bold and enterprising young men, the recipe is all set, they get hold of dear old, good-as-gold Ede Balló, who gullibly imagines that he is “supporting the arts” (i.e. the Szinyei-Group, and this is in their financial interests, too) – so our dear friend Balló, sitting next to me at that first meeting and not expecting much from the whole enterprise, keeps on demurring – but then gets softened up with the Presidency position, which he gullibly accepts. But as you will see, [it is] incredibly naïve to think that the shabby conduct of this “crew” can be made up for in this way – and meanwhile, far away and oblivious to everything, our great compatriot who has done so many wonderful things, is resoundingly hailed and acclaimed – – be our figurehead, our ornament, promote our economic interests to the hilt – let’s have Fülöp László!! –

Let me simply add, for the sake of a little piquancy: The very place where, a few years ago, a collection of my portraits was awarded the first “Nemzeti Szalon” gold medal, that very same place is now about to be infiltrated by the Hungarian Portrait Painters Group (?), while Sándor Endrey^[3] (so superbly represented in the Museum here) has taken the precaution of simply excluding me, and other artists like me, because we have roots in the public consciousness.

Igen tisztelt Barátom!

Másfél évvel ezelőtt meghívást kaptam Sárkány festőművész a fiatalabb gárdához tartozó festőművész collégától „Magy. arczképfestők csoportjának” megalakulást megbeszélendő összejövetelre. Voltak ott kimondottan genre, tájképészek is, és hiányzottak számosan a speciálisan portratisták közül is, de mint előzetes megbeszélésen elegendő volt a jelen levők közt azon nézet, hogy ily nevű csoport alakuljon meg. A jelenlevő mindenki által Balló Collégát mint elnököt, X. Y. Z. jegyző stb., – míg László Fülöp felkérendő lenne a díszelnökség elfogadására. – Nyár dereka lévén, – a szabatosabb megbeszélés, azaz következő összejövetel azon tárgyban majd az ősz elejére kerül sorra. A beköszöntő ősz egy szép napján olvasom a lapokban a „Magy. arczképfestők csoportja” megalakulását. Nevek, nevek, az én nevem hiányzott, jóllehet ezen második összejövetelre különben már meghívást sem kaptam. Balló collegát mint elnököt erre felkerestem felvilágosítás végett...... Nincsen itt semmi tévedés, kérlek szépen olyan fiatalabb vérmesebb elemek összefogva, téged, és hozzád hasonló régi érdemes művészeket egyszerűen leszavaztak,

nem vagytok oda bevalók! Hisz ez abszurdum sőt egyenesen rabulisztikus ilyesmit megcselekedni!!!

Teljesen igazat is adott nékem, mit mellékelt hozzám intézet levelében láthatod. Csittított, ne vegyem ezt különösen komolyan, küldjek azért néhány művemet az annak idején megnyitandó tárlatukra közvetlen hozzá műtermébe majd „azért” ő azt elnöki jogánál fogva majd „beveszi”. Persze az ilyen megszégyenítő mellék ajtón való bejutást mint nevemhez méltatlant, aminek még gondolatát is visszautasítom magamtól. Az egész dologgal 1½ év óta nem is foglalkoztam, reá sem gondoltam, míg e napokban a legapróbb betűkkel eldugottan olvasom véletlenül egyik lapban eme tárlat közeli megnyitásáról szóló hírt. Ha van tudomásod az itteni Szinnyei [sic] Társaság struktúrájáról, csak igen rövid néhány szóval: összeáll néhány művész, jól diplomatikusan összetimporáltan egy gruppot alkotva amelyhez mint legfőbb faktor a sajtót hallatlanul ügyesen felhasználva olyatén van azután ezen csoport a nagy közönség a társadalomba bekonferálva, mint az egyedül fémjelzett valódi és egyedüli magyar komoly művészek, – ami ezen kívül esik, az hulladék, művészi proletárizmus!.... Ehhez kibérelték maguknak, a Szinnyei nevet fedezetnek, – nos jőve

egy pár vállalkozó bátor ifjú ember, a recept már megvan, itt a jó öreg ízig-vérig Gentleman Balló Ede, azon jó hiszemben hogy „művészi ügyet” támogat, (lásd Szinyei-Grupp, gazdasági ügy ez bizony még pedig a javából – jó Balló barátunk, az első összejövetelnél mellettem ülve, nem sok jót várva ettől az egész mozgalomtól bizony roppant szabadkozott, – azóta jó puhitóba került hogy az elnökséget jó hiszemben elfogadta. – De amint látni méltóztatol tőle [illegible] meghatóan naiv gondolat a „legénység” túlkapásait ilyetén reperálni akarni, – míg az abszolute mit sem sejtő a messze távolban a magyar művészek érdekében már oly sok szépet cselekedett hazánkfia, kapja innen az szép hangzatos szavakat – – jövel hozzánk élünkre, dísznek, száz százalékig gazdasági czélunkat előmozdítani – jövel hozzánk László Fülöp!! –

Csupán a pikánteria szempontjából álljon itt: Úgyanott, hol nékem egy arczképcollectiómra a „Nemzeti Szalon” aranyérmét mint elsőnek odaítélték pár éve, ugyanoda készül bevonulni a Magy. arckép festők csoportja (?) midőn előzetesen engem Endrey Sándor (az itteni Muzeumban és kitűnően képviselt) és több hasonló Collegát egyszerűen kisemmiztek mert nekünk gyökerünk van a publikumban.
