Plans are underway for the 2023 Division C Graduate Student Seminar (GSS), which will be held in person on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 and Thursday, April 13, 2023 prior to the AERA Annual Meeting (April 13-16, 2023) in Chicago, IL . This year, Alison Koenka (koenkaac@ou.edu University of Oklahoma) is serving as chair and Lauren Mims (lauren.mims@nyu.edu; New York University ) is serving as vice-chair.
The objective of the GSS is to provide graduate students who are members of AERA Division C with an opportunity to (a) network with peers; (b) receive mentoring and advice from a diverse group of Division C affiliated scholars; and (c) begin developing professional relationships with current and future leaders within the field. The seminar is intended for advanced-level doctoral students who are approaching or are in the dissertation phase of their programs. We encourage students who plan to graduate in 2023 or 2024 to apply, and students who have begun working on their dissertation proposal defense will be given priority.
As part of the seminar, students will: 1) receive one-on-one mentoring from scholars with similar interests; 2) participate in opportunities for manuscript and CV feedback from their mentor; 3) discuss early- career issues such as job search and application strategies, work-life balance, and developing a scholarly identity; 4) explore strategies for teaching undergraduate and graduate students; and 5) engage in panel discussions on research and publishing.
Students interested in participating in the GSS should submit an application by 5:00pm on February 3rd, 2023. Application materials must be submitted online at: AERA Division C GSS Application
In the application, we will ask you to provide the following information:
We will also ask you to provide: 1) Proof of AERA Division C membership; 2) A curriculum vitae (CV).
Please note: We are currently recruiting Division C scholars to serve as mentors in the seminar. We will do our best to match you with a mentor you request. However, all participating mentors will be able provide excellent mentoring to the students in the program.
Upon acceptance, GSS participants will also be required to submit a writing sample (e.g., a manuscript to be submitted for publication) for review as part of the seminar by March 15, 2023. To be eligible, students must register for the annual meeting.
A limited number of participants will be selected for the 2023 GSS based on graduate status, clarity of research interests, and match with participating mentors. Students who attend the seminar will receive a small stipend to support travel costs. Stipend notifications will be sent out by March 30, 2023.
We look forward to seeing you with our Division C colleagues at our AERA 2023 conference!
