HANDMADE PHOTOGRAPHS IN BEESWAX:

A WORKSHOP WITH RAY PFORTNER

Welcome to Ray Pfortner’s Workshop on beeswaxing with photographs, often called Encaustic Photo Transfers. There are two major steps to get ready for the workshop: (1) Send an email to kitbean@gmail.com by March 29 to register, and (2) Provide Ray with 3 digital photographs for your use in the workshop. The following information gives you important details to help you complete the process. Once you have provided 3 photos, you will receive your confirmation to attend the event. Participants must be at least 14 years old to register.

  1. Select three (3) digital photographs (approximately 1-2 MB) made with any kind of camera. Besides your regular digital photos, you may take digital photos of old family pictures or photos of your own art. (Please be aware of copyright issues, so do not use copies of your favorite paintings by another artist.) Color and black-and-white photographs, especially old family photographs work equally well. Any original art medium can be used. All you need is a photograph of the art.
  2. Send the photos as email attachments to Kit Bean kitbean@gmail.com. Put Ray Pfortner Workshop in your subject line. Kit will forward your photos to Ray, who will prepare them for the workshop. In order for you to find your photos easily at the workshop, rename the photos to identify them as yours. (For example, change the photos’ names from their jpeg titles to easily recognized titles: “IMG_1403jpeg” would become “Mary Smith1.”) After your photos are turned in, you will receive a confirmation email. Please allow a day or two for a response. If you do not receive a confirmation email in 3 days, send an email to Kit Bean to check that the photos were received.
  3. The deadline to turn in your photos is Friday, March 29. We cannot hold your place if we have not received the photos by March 29.
  4. When you arrive at the workshop on April 6, Ray will have copies of your photos ready for the workshop.
  5. The workshop will be held at the O Space on April 6 from 1:00-4:00. Follow the signs to the side of the building. (Open Space, 18870 103rd Ave SW, Vashon, WA)

Special Note: Wear old clothes. This is very hands on.

You will leave the workshop with handmade pieces of art you can display, gift or even sell thanks to the magic of beeswax, using a process descended from the encaustic painting of the ancient Greeks.
