Honoured Maestro,

It was with deep regret, indeed with sincere remorse, that I read your letter of 20th August on returning home from my summer holiday. I can scarcely begin to imagine what the reason can have been for the fact that you received neither my letter nor our anniversary issue. When the anniversary issue came out, I wrote a letter and left instructions that it should be sent to London together with a copy of the said issue. I am unable to comprehend what can have happened but am naturally obliged to lay the fault at the door of our own administration, though I should also note that while the anniversary festivities were in progress, our administration was severely overstretched. In any case, I ask you to excuse us, and I shall now repeat what I wrote in my letter:

Allow me to express my gratitude, on behalf of our newspaper, for graciously embellishing our anniversary edition with your art, and particular thanks from me personally for your kindness in allowing me to keep the drawing as a memento. I repeat once again what I have said before, that I would like somehow to repay your unrequitable kindness and generosity and thus I respectfully ask you to permit me to send you a copy of the first volume of the twelve-part series of my collected works, which will come out during the course of October. In return for your beautiful drawing, whose noble lines make it a classic masterpiece, I can send you but monochrome print. – Along with this letter we are also sending you a copy of the anniversary edition of the Pesti Napló, since that too did not reach you in London.

Once again: thank you for your kindness, consideration and generosity and apologies for the inconvenience, for which we take full responsibility.

Mélyen tisztelt Mester,

Nyári utazásom hazatérve nagy sajnálkozással, sőt őszinte szomorúsággal olvastam augusztus 20-án kelt levelét. Alig tudom megérteni, mi történt s mi az oka annak, hogy sem a levelem, sem a jubileumi szám nem jutott el a kezéhez. A jubileumi szám megjelenése után levelet írtam s intézkedtem, hogy a lappal együtt küldjék el Londonba. Nem tudom megérteni, mi történt s kénytelen vagyok természetesen saját adminisztrációnkban keresni a hibát, bár meg kell jegyeznem, hogy a jubileumi napokban adminisztrációnk erősen túl volt terhelve. Mindenesetre szíves elnézését kérjük, most pedig megismétlem akkori levelünk tartalmát:

Hálás köszönetemet fejezem ki a lap nevében, hogy jubileumi számát kegyes volt művészetével díszíteni, s a magam személyében külön, hogy szíves volt a rajzot emlékül felajánlani nekem. Ismétlem, amit már akkor is írtam, hogy szeretném viszonozhatatlan kedvességét is jóságát valahogyan viszonozni s ezért kérem mély tisztelettel, engedje meg, hogy összegyűjtött műveimnek egy, első tizenkét kötetes sorozatát, amely most október folyamán jelenik meg, elküldhessem. Gyönyörű rajzáért, amely a nemes vonalakkal klasszikus remeke, én csak szürke betűket küldhetek. – Ezzel a levéllel egyidejűleg postára adtuk a Pesti Napló jubileumi számát is, miután az sem érkezett meg Londonba.

Még egyszer: hálásan köszönjük kedvességét, figyelmét, jóságát s bocsánatot kérünk a zavarért, amelyet minden tekintetben magunkra vállalunk.
