TOWER OF LONDON

The Tower of London, now the Royal Palace and Fortress of the Majesty, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames in central London, England. It is in the London district of Tower Hamlets.

Was founded by the 11th century as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives name to the whole castle, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078

Since at least 1100, the castle was used as a prison, but this was not the primary purpose.

Well, the Tower is a complex of several buildings situated inside two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat, the castle was expanded in several phases, especially under the reign of Richard the Lionheart, Henry III and Edward I in the centuries 12ND and 13rd centuries.

The Tower of London has played a large role in the history of England. It was located on several occasions and have it controlled was important to control the country

Architecture

The tower was located for its strongest defenses Dominated Saxon London. Apparently, it would have visually dominated the surrounding area and the traffic of the Thames.

The castle is made up of three areas: the innermost contains the White Tower, the earliest phase of construction of the castle, surrounding it to the north, east and west is the core structure, built during the reign of Richard the Lionheart. Finally, there is the outdoor, covering the whole castle and was built under the rule of Edward I.

 

Central courtyard

The central courtyard was originally surrounded by a protective moat, which was filled with about 1220. In this area, a kitchen was also built in the garden. Between 1666 and 1676, the central area was transformed and the palace buildings removed. The area around the White Tower was cleared so that anyone who came near was to cross-country. The Jewel House was demolished, then moving jewels to the Martin Tower.
