It was in response to Secretary Clinton saying: “Every single one of our children deserves the chance to live up to his or her God-given potential.”

(For more context, she said something almost identical to that in the last debate – to which I responded:https://twitter.com/cynthia_meyer/status/654122083404742656)

“Would help if they had the chance to be born. #demdebate #txlege https://t.co/hlKtUUCacp”

Cynthia, quick question: I know you tweeted this out during the debate when abortion was being discussed generally, but I was wondering if your comment was reacting to a specific statement by a candidate? Or a specific exchange between candidates? I just want to make sure I understand the exact context of the comment. Was there a certain point in the debate that made you want to point these statistics out?

Also, I've read through the report and the numbers support your statement. We're hoping to have it up sometime tomorrow.

Absolutely. In the context of discussing the value of human life, many overlook those who never had the chance to be born. The numbers are startling, and I’m glad you all are bringing attention to this issue.

To be clear, that tweet came from my personal Twitter account and I was speaking as a private citizen. Happy to defend the stats, though. Here’s the report from the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene:http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/vs/vs-pregnancy-outcomes-2013.pdf

See page 7. The numbers break down as follows:

Non-Hispanic Black Live Births: 24,108

Non-Hispanic Black Induced Terminations: 29,007

Also, here’s a National Review article on the issue (this references an older report, but it’s the same idea): http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/371704/more-black-babies-aborted-born-new-york-city-alec-torres

Thanks!

Ms. Meyer,

My name is Lauren Caruba and I'm a reporter for the Houston Chronicle. I'm working on a Politifact fact check (our organization recently partnered with them) on one of your tweets during the Democratic debate a couple days ago, in which you said, "More black babies are aborted in NYC than born."

I was hoping that sometime today you could send me the documentation/source upon which you based the statement. I was also wondering what prompted you to make the statement and wanted to see if there was any other context you'd like to add to it.

I'm working on this fact check today, so I would really appreciate it if you could get back to me at your earliest convenience. Thanks very much.
