In the Beginning

Events involving espionage are well documented throughout history. The ancient Egyptians had a thoroughly developed system for the acquisition of intelligence. The Hebrews sent 12 spies to inspect the Promised Land (14-13 c. BCE). The ancient writings of Chinese & Indian military strategists such as Sun-Tzu (6th century BCE) and Chanakya (4th c. BCE) contain information on deception and subversion. Spies were also prevalent in the Greek & Roman empires. During the 13th-14th c. CE, the Mongols relied heavily on espionage in their conquests in Asia and Europe. Feudal Japan often used ninjas to gather intelligence. And modern history produced the infamous Mata Hari, a Dutch dancer in Paris who spied for Germany during World War 1.

The most famous Israeli spy is Eli Cohen z”l who spied for Israel in Syria in the early 1960s, was captured and sentenced to death in 1965. On May 15 Eli wrote to his wife: “I am begging you my dear Nadia not to spend your time in weeping about something already passed. Concentrate on yourself, looking forward for a better future!" (wiki +)

ענייני כתובה

א. הרי פעמים רבות משתמשים חז"ל בלשון "קנין" לעניין אשה לבעלה. האם האישה "קנויה" לבעלה?

ב. אדם חייב לכתוב לאשתו כתובה קודם הנישואין. מה הדין אם הכתובה אבדה ברבות השנים, האם צריך לכתוב כתובה חדשה?

לעניין השאלה הראשונה, הנה אף שבוודאי רבותינו משתמשים בלשון "קנין" לעניין אשה לבעלה, וכגון במסכת קידושין: "האשה 'נקנית' בשלוש דרכים, 'וקונה' את עצמה בשתי דרכים. 'נקנית:' בכסף, בשטר ובביאה... 'וקונה' את עצמה: בגט ובמיתת הבעל." ועוד במקומות רבים. אולם אין זה "קנין" במובן הפשטני של המילה, שהרי הבעל אינו עושה מה שירצה באשתו, ואינו יכול למכרה כפי שניתן למכור עבד וכדומה, אלא מובן השורש "קנין" של אשה לבעלה, הוא קנין אישות, דהיינו שעל ידי פעולה של נתינת שווה פרוטה (או כנהוג כיום, טבעת) או פעולה קנינית אחרת, האשה יוצאת ממעמדה האישי של "פנויה" ונכנסת למעמד "אשת איש". ומשמעות קנינית זו היא כמובן רק מבחינת המעמד של האשה מבחינת איסורה החמור כלפי העולם, והיתרה כלפי בעלה.

ואם כי בודאי שנספחים לקנין זה גם עניינים ששייכים לקניני ממונות פשוטים, כגון זכות הבעל לזכות במציאה שמצאה אשתו, מכל מקום אין שייכות בין קנינים אלו לקנין האשה, שהרי גם הבעל מתחייב לאשה חיובים רבים בזמן הנישואים ובודאי שאין לומר שהבעל קנוי לאשתו. אין אלו אלא התחייבות בלבד.

לעניין השאלה השנייה, אם אבדה הכתובה, צריך לכתוב לאשתו כתובה חדשה, בנוסח מיוחד הנקרא "כתובה דארכסא" דהיינו נוסח לכתובה שאבדה, ואסור לשהות עם אשתו בלא כתובה, ולכן צריך להיזהר ללכת אצל תלמיד חכם אמיתי הבקיא בענייני כתובות שיכתוב להם נוסח שטר כתובה חדש ויחתמו עליו כראוי.

ובפרט נפוץ הדבר אצל אנשים שהיו רחוקים מן התורה, ואחר כך התקרבו יותר, ובדרך כלל הכתובה שנכתבה ביום הנשואים אבדה ואין לה זכר. ועל זוגות אלה לפנות לרב תלמיד חכם הבקי בסידור חופה קידושין, שיכתוב להם כתובה חדשה, כמבואר.

Daf Bite  –   טעם דף

How much of what happens to us is in our hands, and how much is in God’s hands? This question is the crux of a discussion about how much brothers will be responsible for each others’ illnesses.

The Mishna on today’s daf teaches that brothers who are being supported by their father’s estate will share equally in profits or losses made by one of the brothers who was pressed into imperial service, since he was chosen as the representative from the family.  If one of the brothers becomes ill and must pay medical bills, he is responsible to pay that out of his own pocket.

In the Gemara, Ravin quotes Rabbi Ela as teaching that the sick brother is responsible for his medical bills only if he was the cause of his own illness. What illness is he responsible for? Rabbi Ḥanina taught – ha-kol be-yedei shamayim, ḥutz mi- tzinin u’paḥim – all is in God’s hands, except for colds and obstacles. Thus a person is responsible to avoid illnesses caused by these things.

A Story - of a kettle

Shimon planned his trip to Portugal to the last detail. “Remember to take the electric kettle,” he noted for himself, and in fact he did. When he arrived at the 4-star Lisbon hotel, he quickly unpacked, placing the kettle on the small kitchen counter.

It was 12 midnight and 11pm in Israel. Tea time. Shimon added water to the kettle and plugged it in.

The loud blast almost gave Shimon a heart attack, and after it a pitch dark engulfed the room. Shimon managed to locate his cell phone and turned on the flashlight. He opened the door and snicked a look to the hallway to see if anyone heard the sound. The hallway was dark. Through the faded emergency light, Shimon could have seen people’s  shadows. Although, Shimon didn’t understand Portuguese, he could have noticed the worried tone in their voices. Then, someone said in basic English that the entire hotel was blacked out!

Shimon panicked. His heart pounded, pacing as he just ran a marathon. “I must eliminate the evidence,” he thought, “and pretend that nothing has happened.” Shimon took the kettle and opened the window. He had this kettle for 20 years and loved it much. But, it has to go now. Shimon opened the window and looked down. 5-stories below was a garden. It was dark too. He aimed at a group of bushes that he barely noticed... and let the kettle go. Now scared and nervous and guilty he went back to his bed, covered himself up with his blanket, but couldn’t fall asleep for a long hour....

A knock on the door woke Shimon up. There was daylight, and the knocking continued. Shimon’s heart started pounding again, his mind thinking “they got me!” But he had no choice. The only other exit was the window. Scared and reluctant Shimon opened the door. A smiling hotel worker stood there and said: “Good morning sir. We just wanted to make sure that you are fine. Last night Lisbon’s main power-station has a major blast...” tbs

Biblical News: we need some wine

An ancient text thought to have been erased by the sands of time has been been brought back to life by researchers at Tel Aviv University, using advanced imaging technology.

The ink-inscribed shard was found in 1965 at Tel Arad, an ancient desert fortress located near the modern city of Arad. The site served as a military outpost on the southern border of the kingdom of Judah and was populated by 20 to 30 soldiers. Most of the ostraca found in the site, including the latest artifact, date to around 600 BCE, shortly before the kingdom of Judah’s destruction in 586 BCE by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II.

The front side of the shard discusses money transfers. The newly revealed back side shows 17 words, believed to be a continuation of the text on the front side. Many of these inscriptions are addressed to Elyashiv, the quartermaster of the [Arad] fortress. They deal with the logistics of the outpost, such as the supply of flour, wine and oil to subordinate units.

The new inscription begins with a request for wine, as well as a guarantee for assistance if the addressee has any requests of his own. It concludes with a request for the provision of a certain commodity to an unnamed person, and a note regarding a ‘bath,’ an ancient measurement of wine, carried by a man named Ge’alyahu. On the Parasha & Beyond…

 

Parasha: Shəlaḥ - Bamidbar (Numbers) 13:1-15:41

Parasha's Historical Context: Creation Time: 2449 (1475 bce) the second year for the departure from Mitsrayim. Bnei Israel 's 40-year journey continues as they leave Sinai Desert, go through Kivrot Hata’ava and Hatserot and then settle in the desert of Paran, on the twentieth of the second month in the second year.

Parashort: Moshe sends twelve spies to the Erets K’na’an. Forty days later they return, carrying a huge cluster of grapes, a pomegranate and a fig, to report on a lush and bountiful land. But ten of the spies warn that the inhabitants of the land are giants and warriors "more powerful than we"; only Kalev and Yehushua insist that the land can be conquered, as G-d has commanded. The people weep that they would rather return to Egypt. G-d suggests eradicating Israel, but Moshe convinces him not to. Consequently, G-d decrees that Israel's entry into the Land shall be delayed forty year, during which time that entire generation will die out in the desert. (chabad)

Haftara: Shəlaḥ - Yehoshua (Joshua), 2:1-24.

Haftit: Joshua, Moshe’s successor, sends two spies, Pinḥas ben Eleazar & Kalev ben Yefuneh, to Jericho in order to scout out the city. The spies, posing as pottery salesman, arrived at Raḥav’s Jericho Inn, where they stayed. The king of Jericho hears of the presence of the two spies, and requests that Raḥav turn them over immediately. Raḥav’s reply to the king is that these men had already departed.

Connection to the Parsha: Parshat Sh’laḥ begins with G-d speaking to Moshe, and commanding him to send spies to the land of K’na’an. In this week’s Haftara, there is a continuation of this commandment, where the Nation of Israel sends spies to look at the Land of Kna’an. (Haftorhaman)

Ktav Torah - of a yod

Parashat haShavua’ Shəlaḥ is known for its le Carré style espionage story. Actually, with much more suspense. Moshe prepares to send 12 men, one from each Tribe, to inspect the Promised Land:  “וּרְאִיתֶ֥ם אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ... הֲטוֹבָ֥ה הִ֖וא אִם־רָעָ֑ה.”

Upon return, 10 of the 12 spies raise deep concern about the fierce and giants peoples of the Land. Conversely, Yehoshua’ of the Tribe of Efrayim and Kalev of the Tribe of Yehuda speak positively and say that the Land is very very good: “טוֹבָ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ מְאֹ֥ד מְאֹֽד.”

At the outset, we read that before sending the meraglim, Moshe changes the name of Hoshea' bin Nun to Yehoshua’: "וַיִּקְרָ֥א משֶׁ֛ה לְהוֹשֵׁ֥עַ בִּן־נ֖וּן יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ." We also notice that when the 12 spies start their mission, they all go up the Negev but only one reaches Hevron. "וַיַּֽעֲל֣וּ בַנֶּ֘גֶב֘ וַיָּבֹ֣א עַד־חֶבְרוֹן֒."

These 2 points raise 2 questions: Why did Moshe change only Yeshoshua’s name, why not also Kalev’s name? And who is the one of the 12 men to go to Hevron?

Our sages explain that Kalev was the one who visited Hevron, which is located in the tribal land of Yehuda, to see the graves of the Nation’s Fathers & Mothers at the Makhpela Cave. Why Kalev? Kalev was the national type of Israelite - לְאוּמִי. One of those people whose love to the nation and of the land fires up within them. Those people whose love to the Land, the Eretz, in simple, deep and pure. They naturally try and connect to their ancestors’ roots and to their motherland and are willing to defend it with all their might.

This is the source of Kalev’s will-of-power which enabled him to stand on his own truth and to not join the 10 spies’ advice.

On the other hand, Yehushua’ was Moshe’s servant, a man of law, who all his life was busy with Torah and mitsvot: “וּמְשָׁרְתוֹ יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן נוּן נַעַר לֹא יָמִישׁ מִתּוֹךְ הָאֹהֶל.” Moshe noticed that and was concerned that Yehoshua’ will not be able to stand up to the pressure from the other 10 meraglim. So Moshe added to Hoshea’’s name the letter “yod” - which is one of four the letters of Hashem’s name - and also prayed for Yehoshua’ strength to follow his own inner truth: "יָהּ יוֹשִׁיעֲה מֵעֲצַת הַמְּרַגְּלִים."

Different people are made differently and may need different approach. Moshe, the shepherd of sheep and people, knew that. Can we tell too?

Climate change has been a hot topic for a few decades now. Recently, with the increased icing of the north pole and the lowering of sea level by 3 millimeters, the change of the climate change has become also a topic, although a cold one.

The study of climate is known as Climatology, or climate science, and is scientifically defined as weather conditions averaged over a period of time. The word Climatology is a compound word of climate, from the Greek klima, "region, zone"; and logia, “study.”

There is no true Hebrew word “climate.” We rather use the word “aklim -אַקְלִים” which is a Hebrew form of “climate.”

For climatology, Hebrew speakers often use the foreign-לוֹעֲזִי form “קְלִימָטוֹלוֹגְיָה - klimatologia.”

A bit longer yet Hebrew version exist and is “mada’ ha’aklim - מַדָע האַקלִים” which literally means “the climate science.”

Would the observation, the food brought, the account, and the advice given, have been different, were the 12 spies all women? If yes, in what way/s?
