Subject: Urgent: Oppose the Amendment to the Data Bill – Protect Trans Privacy
Dear MP,
I am writing to you as a concerned constituent to strongly urge you to oppose the proposed amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill that seeks to mandate the collection of sex data strictly based on “biological sex” or “sex at birth.”
This amendment — tabled by members of the Conservative Party — is a dangerous rollback of rights for transgender, non-binary and intersex people. It undermines the Gender Recognition Act, threatens the privacy and safety of countless individuals, and violates principles protected by the Equality Act, the Human Rights Act, and GDPR.
If passed, this change would:
This amendment follows the recent Supreme Court ruling that redefined “sex” in the Equality Act as “biological sex” — a decision made without consulting a single trans organisation. That ruling has already caused confusion, fear, and legal uncertainty for thousands of trans people. Combined with this bill, it creates a hostile environment where our identities are invalidated and our safety is at risk.
This is not just a technical adjustment — it is a targeted political move that risks grave harm to a vulnerable population. It creates a precedent that state data can be used to erase our identities. We cannot allow this.
I urge you to stand up for the rights of transgender, non-binary and intersex people by opposing both this bill and the dangerous precedent set by the Supreme Court ruling. Please vote against this amendment and speak publicly in defence of our right to privacy, dignity, and recognition.
I would appreciate a response on your stance and how you intend to act when this comes before Parliament.
Yours sincerely,
