Course Objectives
Oral Production:
Particular emphasis is placed on the communicative competence of Spanish in the course. The goal is to teach the student the ability to communicate according to the situation, purpose, and roles of the participants. At this level the student will be able to narrate daily activities using regular and irregular verbs of different tenses that are learned in class. The student will also practice orally the grammatical structures learned in class.
Written Production:
This course provides a variety of exercises that develop students’ proficiency in writing, spelling, vocabulary, and the correct use of past and imperfect tenses, prepositions and pronouns. The student will write different types of text and create small reflective essays. The student will express activities that express continuity, and manifest in writing their opinion on real and unreal facts. The student will express doubt, emotion, prohibition, etc. using the present subjunctive, and write a small review of a book or movie.
Listening Comprehension:
The student will gain the ability of to understand their experience or that of another student that is related to using the different tenses of verbs learned in class. They will understand instructions and respond to questions made by their classmates and professors. They will begin to perceive the tone of the speaker, for example, if it is a humoristic or sarcastic tone, etc. The student will distinguish between a formal and informal discourse.
Reading Comprehension:
The student will understand and participate actively in different activities related to understanding the readings. In those cases where the student does not understand the vocabulary of texts and idiomatic expressions they will use a dictionary or ask the professor. Reading activities are derived from authentic sources and often reflect cultural themes exploring lifestyles and values in Mexico.
