Course Description

In this course the student will learn academic essay writing skills. The goal of this class is to learn about the characteristics of the academic essay in order to write academic essays on topics that are of interest to the area of study of the student.

• The student will learn about the different types of essays and their essential characteristics
• The student will apply strategies to create essays that will be reviewed in class

Methodology

From readings and class lectures, the student will understand, analyze, and interpret essays and create similar text. The professor will present examples to the class of the different types of essays. The students will experiment with these different types of essays in order to express ideas.

• Interpretative overview essays
• Cause/effect and problem/solution essays
• Argumentative essays
• Rules for basic writing, punctuation, and spelling
• Types of descriptions: places, people, animals, etc.
• Biographies, letters, comments
• Homonym words, synonyms, parónimas, etc.
• Use of relative pronouns
• Written production exercises
• Chronologies
• Forms of the past
• Overviews and synopsis
• Formulas for paragraphs, time nexus
• Nexus of concession, causals and finality
• Characteristics of the story and auditory and written exercises
• Academic essay (French or English style)
