Daf Bite  –   טעם דף

Our Gemara describes a time when Rav Yehuda and Rabba came to visit Rabba bar bar Hana while he was ill. After a discussion of halakhot related to messengers who brought a get from the Diaspora to Israel, a habbara walked into the house and took away the light that they had in the room. Rabba bar bar Hana reacted to this by saying that he would prefer to be ruled by God - or even by the Romans - rather than by the Persians who made life so difficult for the Jews.

The term habbara is what the Gemara calls Zoroastrians - the Persian priests - who are also referred to as amgoshim or Magi.  They were an independent tribe who, over time, developed into the priestly caste of the Persian empire.

(Daf Yomi from Steinsaltz.org; Gittin 17a-b)

Time to Smile

Whenever my I argue with my wife and she says:

”You know, I don’t really need you...”

I then go and tighten up all the jars’ lids in the house...

Rav Question – שאלת רב

"Falsely shouting fire in a crowded theater" is unlawful (Schenck vs. the US 1919);

Can we write “kill the others” in a socially crowded electronic media?

A Story - of People

The People Who Love Me / Tsvika Potsino

The people who really love me

Don’t have to say that

I can see it in their eyes

Sometimes I feel their love

In the flavour of the cake slice they share with me

The people who truly love me

Could be very far away

Sometimes I don’t see them for many years

It’s enough for me to know that they are there, loving

The people who truly love me

Don’t have to be strong,

Or beautiful,

Or especially wise

They are special in that that they love me

Their love gives me strength

To love more

Myself

My family

The friends

The nation

Everyone in the world

The people who love me

Know how to love

And it is certainly enough

Jewish World the Bal Ej

The 'secret Jews' of Ethiopia, the Bah Ej, are emerging from the shadows. For thousands of years, the Bal Ej practiced Judaism in secret - now they are reemerging, and they want to come home to Israel.

There are currently around 135,500 Jews of Ethiopian descent living in Israel, including more than 50,000 native-born Israelis. The ancient community was exiled from Israel in pre-Talmudic times, and spent much of its long exile largely cut off from other Jewish communities. Some - known as the Beta Israel - preserved their Jewish identity despite harsh persecution, while others - often known as Falash Mura - were forcibly converted to Christianity, in some cases practicing Judaism secretly.

But just as Israel poises to "wrap up" the return of Ethiopian Jewry to their homeland, another community has been re-emerging in the heart of the Horn of Africa state, the Bal Ej.

Bal Ej means craftsmen in Amharic. According to their oral history, they originate from Beta Israel of Gondar region. A story of their migration from Gondar region to North Shewa region was also documented by Jacque Faitlovitch, a prominent researcher of Beta Israel, in his journey diaries in 1910.

But unlike the Beta Israel of Gondar who practiced Judaism openly, the Beta Israel of North Shewa were forced to act outwardly as Christians and practice Judaism in strict secrecy to avoid severe persecutions and discrimination.

Like Beta Israel, the Bal Ej practice animal sacrifice, follow strict purification laws, strictly observe Shabbat, circumcision, and dietary laws.

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Makom BaParasha – Pithom & Ra’amses

“And they built for Pharaoh treasure/storage/fortress cities, Pithom and Ra’amses.” (Exodus 1:11)

***

Pithom (Hebrew: פתם‎) also called Per-Atum or Heroöpolis or Heroonopolis (Greek: Ἡρώων πόλις or Ἡρώ) was an ancient city of Egypt. Multiple references in ancient Greek, Roman, and biblical sources exist for this city. The exact location of this city remains somewhat uncertain. A number of scholars identified it as the modern archaeological site of Tell-el-Maskhuta. Others say that the site is identified with Tell er-Retabeh, while the 10th century Jewish scholar, Saadia Gaon, identified the place in his Judeo-Arabic translation of the Pentateuch as el-Fayyum, a place located 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of Cairo.

Pi-Ramesses (/pɪər.ɑːmɛs/); (Pi-Ramesses Aa-nakhtu, meaning "House of Ramesses, Great in Victory") was the new capital built by the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt Pharaoh Ramesses II (Ramesses the Great, reigned 1279–1213 BC) at Qantir, near the old site of Avaris. The city had previously served as a summer palace under Seti I (c. 1290–1279 BC), and may have been originally founded by Ramesses I (c. 1292–1290 BC) while he served under Horemheb. (wiki)

 Ra’amses vs. Ra’meses

Ra'amseis (Exod. 1:11) is a place name, as are all the others; Ra'meseis (Gen. 47:11); miRa'meseis (Exod. 12:37; Num. 33: 3; 33:5). In our parasha this place-name is pointed with two Patachs one under the Resh and one under the Ayin and a Sheva under the Mem. In the other places there is a Sh’va under the Ayin and Sh’va Na under the Mem. Ra'amseis is mentioned as a city of storage. Rashi (in a comment which does not appear in the first print), states that these cities were originally not suitable for storage and the building operation made them suitable. The implication of this comment is that we have here different pronunciations of the same place-name.

R' A. ibn Ezra maintains that these are two different place-names. In our parasha he writes this is not a place of habitation of Israel. Elsewhere (Gen. 47:1) he writes that the land of Goshen is a general name including smaller lands, one of which is the land of Ra'meseis and the Ayin has a Sheva Nach. When the Ayin has a Patach, he argues, it is not a place where Israel lived, but one of Pharaoh's storage cities.

(Dr. Mshulam Karlberg/Hebrew Morsles/shemayisrael.com)

Parasha – Sh’mot: (Exodus) Sh’mot 1:1-6:1

Historical Context: Location: Erets Mitsrayim, Erets Midyan, Erets Mitsrayim and Goshen. Creation Time: 2340 (new Par’oh) to 2447 (Moshe returns to Mitsryim with Aharon). General calendar: 1583-1529 bce. Moshe was born creation year 2368 (1574 bce).

Parashort: * Paroh orchestrates the oppression of the Bnei Yisrael. Newborn males were drowned in the Nile. The heroism of the two Midwives was rewarded. Moshe's birth and "basket river cruise" is detailed. He was adopted by Batya, the daughter of Par’oh, and raised by his own mother, Yokheved. Moshe killed the Egyptian but was turned in by his own people. Forced to flee, he ended up in the house of Yitro. Moshe married Tsiporah, Yitro's daughter, and Gershon, his first son, was born. Moshe received his mission at the Burning Bush. At its conclusion, Moshe, armed with the power of Hashem's promise and the three "signs", was prepared to confront Par’oh. Moshe asked Yitro for permission to go on his mission. Moshe and Aharon met with the Elders and received their support. Moshe and Aharon unsuccessfully confronted Par’oh who punished the Hebrews by refusing to supply straw for the making of bricks.

Haftara Sh’mot Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) 1:1- 2:3

Haftit: Yirmiyahu being destined to prophesy. G-d reassures Yirmiyahu that regardless of his feelings of unworthiness, He would always be there for him. Yirmiyahu then has two prophecies: The first is a vision of an almond tree sprouting its first branch. In the springtime, it is the almond tree that sprouts the earliest and the quickest. It takes 21 days for the almond tree to sprout. This prophecy was a warning to the Israelites that the destruction of Jerusalem will be soon and quick. It took 21 days from the day that Nebukhadnezzar broke through the walls of Jerusalem on 17th of month of Tammuz, until the destruction of Bait Hamikdash, on the 9th of Av. The second vision is of a boiling pot with its opening to the north. The “boiling pot” symbolizes the nation of Bavel, which was situated to the north. The Haftara concludes with the reassuring words that the nation and the land of Israel are dear to G-d. (haftorahman)

Connection to the Parasha: In the Parsha, Moshe is appointed as a prophet and a leader. Like Moshe, Yirmiyahu is called upon by G-d to relay his messages to the Jews. They both modestly rejected G-d’s request; both claimed that they didn’t posses the power of speech needed to convince the nation of Israel to change their ways; both prophesied for 40 years. (haftorahman)
